Motor for Badger
« on: May 21, 2011, 01:21:29 pm »

Hi Guys,
Can anyone help? I have just purchased a Deans Marine BADGER and I am starting to collect the parts to start the build. The instruction recommend a Kestral V motor with an OLYMPUS belt drive. I have searched the internet but I can not find any.
Would anyone know where I could get these or recommend an alternative.
Many thanks

I hope you have patience of a saint with the Deans Kit they are to put it bluntly ... a headach.

Follow my build log you will see that I and many others have had nothing but problems with the kits they make!

For the motors i would go with direct shaft drives rather then belts, the Komet build im doing stated belt driven shafts but yet im using 6:1 geared motors , as the Badger is a single screw i would be more inclined to purchase a T12 from mobile marine models or one of the MFA ranges of geared motors possibly 2.5:1 of say 12v for either motor.

MFA Geared motors http://www.westbourne-model.co.uk/mfa-geared-motor-1743-0.html

T12 motors http://www.mobilemarinemodels.com/acatalog/Motors.html

Good luck that's all i have to say!

for the motor.  Quite possibly Deans, who market the motor and made the suggestion, would know where to get the drive that they reccomended.
Like roadrunner says, a geared drive would also do the job.

MFA don't show the old Olympus belt drive on their website, but they may still have them in stock. Ring them and ask for Bruce. I can also recommend the geared Torpedo 500 (6:1 for 12v operation); it requires no setting up and has an integral metal mount, too. If you intend to use an FM radio then you will need three suppressor capacitors as opposed to just the one fitted. Shouldn't be required with a 2.4GHz set.

http://www.deansmarine.co.uk/shop/product_info.php/cPath/5_13/products_id/200  Deans Kestral motor is an excellent motor [I have several ] cost more than some but are worth the extra money.

Contact Ron Dean about information about the Olympus belt drive. I believe these are made by MFA but could not find them on their web site.

Dont tell the boss but I run all mine with one capacitor. No problem just what I do.

Cheapskate!
Seriously, they are particlularly "dirty" motors and the fitting of suppressors is recommended. Just one less thing to blame when it all goes pear-shaped.......

Just a question....not meaning to stir anything up, but why do you need to gear the motor? I've always used direct drive and have a decent speed controller(s). I know that's not going to allow the motor to be at its most efficient, but if trouble on the water is imminent then the extra power is invaluable. BY.

The suggested prop is 55mm dia 3-blade and the kit manufacturer recommends a belt-drive. If one is not available then the nearest alternative is a geared motor. Direct drive for this size of prop would require a larger motor than the one for which the model was designed.
