How old is Yours

Hi All

Two Questions - answer with a pic attached if you can. My little boat (under refurbishment) is fifty plus - so
1. Who on the forum owns the oldest model boat that still runs?
2. Where in the world is the oldest model boat of any kind?

my oldest boat is 35 years old, its a vic smeed bustler i built in 1976. I will try & scan a picture of it.
The oldest model boat is a little older than that, 7000 years older actually  :o

Hi Glenn

I'd love to see your vic smeed bustler. The picture in your boat link didn't work for me but the text did. It seems to be a real boat they found buried in Iraq and not an anient model boat. My money's on the oldest model boat turning out to be an egyptian model, but what do I know?

Known as the M.S Dolphin Mk2 model kit made in 1965(ish)

My oldest model boat is a Yeoman Minx, thought to be around 1955.  Brought back to life with a brushless set-up and Planet T5 radio.

     Ex Col Taplin cabin cruiser.  54 years ( confirmed ) old.  Possibly slightly older.
     Diesel and old gear now in storage. Fitted with electric motor.
     Last run 2009 but nothing to stop it getting wet again.

The shape Wetwater's Ex Col Taplin cabin cruiser reminded me of my first holiday on the Norfolk Broads  :P

Dont remind me Norseman - the only holiday I had on the Broads was in early March - 30 junior signalmen and radio ops
from HMS Ganges, took aldis lights and semaphore flags and radios and there was us in the middle of winter practising
manouvres on the 4 cabin cruisers - then it snowed and I slipped over the side wearing  two pairs of trousers, two sea jerseys and
a duffel coat - I went down a long way before I was fished out with a boat hook. B. freezing and nearly the end of me.

That's enough to keep you away from going there again Geoff.

My first experience was picking a boat up from Hickling, 5 minutes instruction and the down towards the very low bridge at Potter Heigham. Blowing a gale behind me, torrential rain so no visibility, and the tide had just turned as I approached the bridge. I  tried to come to the bank (as you need a pilot) The the back end developeda will of its own and I ended up across the bridge hole with wind and tide wanting to keep me there - oh the fun I had.

Having a pint a few days later at Wroxham (where a guy named Ray seemed to own every shop) I witnessed a lady in a rather large craft (speeding too) attempt the low bridge with her large canopies still in place - it was almost spectacular. In an American movie of course the boat would have blown up as do all their cars.

Hey - I'm going to find a picture of the boat we hired and see if anyone knows the type - I might do a diorama of me stuck at Potter Heigham!

I built the MTB in my picture about 1962 from MM plans.
It has had a number of facelifts over the years but is now only a hull, deck and Perkasa type bridge.
It has had a number of diesel motors over the years including an ED Hunter and a 5cc. Miles Special.
I was going to convert it to electric and got as far as putting in twin shafts but then I was side tracked into OO gauge railways.
It now sits sadly on the shelf in the workshop.
The other oldie I have is my fathers Cabin Cruiser built in 1973 and named Tuk Tuk after the sound our youngest daughter made when she was born.   It still has it's original 15cc. Gannet and exhaust but would need complete refurbishment to run again.
Maybe one day!  :((

You're winning so far at 1900 logoman. I was just wondering about how doing any work on very old models like yours might reduce them in monetary value? I'd rather see one nicely refurbished even if its price goes down but it would be nice to know the answer.

brianB6 that Tuk Tuk has got all that family history attached to it - be nice to bring it back to life and add some more.

Norseman, I took the decision to refurbish it - solder some of the boiler, replace the steam pipe, rebuild the skeg and rudder, deep clean the engine and fill a crack in the hull.
I don't think I have devalued the boat, what is important to me is that it should have life, and be sailed.

It's not technically mine, but SY Gondola owns a model of her built by her first captain Felix Hamell, the livery she is in on trhe model dates it to around 1870.

When we sandblast the hull of Gondola this year we are hoping to restore her to the livery on the model.

I have my grandfathers steam straight runners, one built in 1929 the other 1948. I have a very large (and bloomin heavy) scale steam tug built in 1938 (it was running at Mayhem last week) several of my late fathers boats (1960's) a 35cc straight runner built in 1964 (also seen at Mayhem), a 1932 steam straight runner (being re-furbed) my crash tender that I built in 1972 to name but a few   ;) ;)

Hi Logoman,

No it isn't live steam, Hamell was a captain in the purest sense- he knew his ship inside out and her lines by heart, but he most certainly was not a member of the black hand gang!

Im afraid the only picture I have is of the model in the Ruskin Museum where it is displayed at the moment, along with a few artefacts from the original Gondola (1859) that we have recently discovered.
