Source of Thread bar
« on: June 01, 2011, 02:53:40 pm »

I have had some issues making up some new motor mounts for my tug, my issues always been the placement of the motor, which i over came with geared motors, however after changing one of the motors over the mount they were originaly attatched to has been damaged trying to get it out of the boat, took quite a heavy hand to get it out  >:-o

So i have devised a way to make up new mounts but needed a source of threaded bar at the 3mm dia which the motors could be floated on ( so i no longer have to remove the whole mount through a 8" hole!) which i couldn't get locally any more, and getting bolts of a M3 thread 2.5"-3" in length are a rarity, so had to search online and found this company

http://www.ironmongeryonline.com/product/M3-Metric-Threaded-Rod---Steel/5570/

They promise next day delivery if ordered by 3pm ( so tomorrow i find out if that's true) P&P was £4.50 but they are delivering 2m lengths of materials.

Even if they don't deliver the next day, the prices i though were quite reasonable ( £1.58 per M)  and they do have stock of M3 -M4 upwards of bar in different materials , steel, stainless, steel zinc plated & brass , they may even have raw bar ( non threaded, if you phone up) that could be used to make up prop shafts etc, there is also a lot of stock of washers and nuts in the same sizes in the same material's packs of 250 from 99p pending on the material.

I Just though I'd post the website and see if its of value to anyone else.

Very useful, thank you for that!
I need some threaded bar myself and have been travelling quite a way to get it previously, this place looks like an excellent alternative.

I make my motors and their mounts easily removable from my boats.  First a platform of 1/4" plywood, drilled to suit the bent aluminum motor mount.  I put blind nuts on the bottom of the platform and use Allen head machine screws to hold the motor mount to it.  The platform is glued into the hull with 3M 4200 marine sealant.  When the motor needs to come out, as when the stuffing tube needs grease, I just unscrew the 4 machine screws and the set screw on the motor coupling, and out she comes.

CgAux26 thanks for your input, unfortunately i don't have the luxury of space in my hull the props exit about 1/2" from the base of the hull... i have no where to mount a plate with bolts stuck to one side, not only due to the prop shafts high issues, but also the curvature of the hull at the sides reduces my glue surface for the motors mounts due to there surface area. trust me i spent months working out how to get round it, and this method is the best one for my needs without using the UV joints at an angle.

Well they kept there word, package arrived at 12.05pm Good or what,( i ordered at 14.30 yesterday) I will be ordering from them again!

Just unwrapped it the bar is attached to a nice bit of pine bar, that will come in handy for making up my barge, so i got a 2m strip of 2"x1" pine fro free whcih would normally cost you £4 from the hardware store
