Unknown Helicopter.
« on: June 08, 2011, 05:02:06 pm »

My neighbour came by with a large cardboard box, and said " You do modelling don't you?" He then gave me said box announcing it had a Heli that he had bought at a Boot Sale and could I get it going as he fancied flying it in his garden!!!!!!!!
I looked in the box and there was a heli, not Twin Rotor but one with Flybar and Swash Plate and Tail Rotor,Gyro, etc. a real Heli.Rotor diameter is 55 cms. Tx is 6 channel, has Rates and two Trims above each stick apart from normal Trims. No body but all is there. Charged the Batteries on Tx and Heli, cleaned it up, checked all the plugs etc, and found. No On/Off switch! Now what? It seemed that when you plug in the Heli Battery that switches everything on, HHHMMMM!!! I do not like that! Set the throttle to stop and switched on Tx and plugged in Heli Battery. Nothing. Then the Gyro light lit up. I jiggled the sticks and both servos did their stuff, but no Motor. Then the Tail Rotor ran and a few seconds later the Main started. The throttle works, and it stops with closed throttle stick, but where would I find out where the starting settings are for the Flybar and Main Rotor Pitch? The Flybar paddles are obviously incorrect, one is nearly at 45° to the axis. This is definitely no Beginners Model, so what would any of you do in similar circumstances? Comments, of all kinds(!) welcome!

Give it back to him and say find someone else to do it before this thing kills me?!  {-)

It may be worth asking on a helicopter forum, although i expect you would get some good answer here since its an electrical problem rather then a mechanical i think from your description.
Or better that find your local heli club and ask them to help since they will be the experts, (or give the model back and tell him to go see a heli club!)

I have no suggestions other then that, i have no clue on helicopters nor how a gyro works within them.

Hi, I flew helis for a few years and it sounds like either there is a disconnected wire to the motor or the motor has been burnt out. BTW, is it on 2.4gHz or 35mHz.  If on 2.4 gHz, it might simply need binding to the TX.

Is there a name on the heli ?  (The makers usually have their name plastered all over). Photos would help to identify it.

If you dont know helis then do NOT start the motor. A 55cm rotor at 20,000 revs can remove legs and arms etc.

yes post some pics and if you plan to power it up, fix it down firmly (I use ratchet straps) to a table or something

hi.

Most electric helis will not power up if the throttle stick is off the botom setting ie right down at the bottom as this is a safety feature so you don't chop off your head !! when fitting the battery. The radio works a few seconds after battery connection with the gyro first then everything else again safety .. also if the heli is tilted over on its side etc then some have another safety feature to cut power to the motor in the event the heli has fallen over to stop it doing the " funky chicken " again safety.

The correct way to try it is to ensure the throttle stick is at low position ie fully down its either mode 1 or 2 which could be either left or right stick, switch on the tx then connect the batt then place the heli on its skids and leave it alone for a few secs this allows the gyro to set up..some have a green flashing light until it is set then a solid green light, when this is done try the throttle stick SLOWLY the tail may start first then the main rotor if its fixed pitch then the throttle gives lift  (ie no cyclic ).

Interesting you said both servos did there stuff...if its a " proper " heli then it would have at least 3 for the swash or even 4 + 1 for the tail sounds like a fixed pitch to me , I think E Sky Honey bee did one like that.

post a pic and it should be obvious to anyone who knows helis what it is as there are so may electric helis out there..could be a twister , E-flight, E-Sky or whatever.
Hope this is of use.

Thanks for all the help, here are some pics. On the Boom is written " Micro Electric Helicopter" then "HSM 01". The Tx has the style of one about 5 years old, is on 35Mhz. Only 3 from the 6 Channels are used. LH stick, up down axis, Flybar Pitch. RH stick up down Throttle, Left Right Swash Plate(?). The Tail Totor seems to be operated by the Throttle stick. The Gyro golws red on plug-in, then settles down with a yellow light.

Thank you all so much, has really helped! :-))Anyway have decided it is really not my thing and have returned it to its owner, told him it functions, but needs setting-up and a good check over, and not to attempt to fly it in his garden or lounge!! :o Suggested he went to a Model Shop or the flying club near us, might get some sense out of them. Thanks again, you really get things done!! ;)

Maybe that is why it was for sale at a Boot Sale!! I think I am better off not getting involved!! ;)
