I think you can mount a speaker practically anywhere that fits i know Martins Happy hunter has it fitted facing up under the deck hatch... i'll get a photo

Other have made mounting boxes for there speaker(s) to increase the 'boom' effects and such.
I don't think it matter how or where you fit it as long as it don't get wet ( unless you have one of the water proof speakers) and you can remove it for general maintenance.

I don't have sound in any of my models for the simple fact its another gadget that can go wrong, besides i sail my models at distance ( speed boats and tugs alike) once out 20 yards or so you can't hear them anyway, never a feature i have wanted but going by reading threads on the forum there are a few that have used boxes to case there speakers, and others as pictured above don't. i guess it may come down the speaker size, location and space you have to build in such a thing will depend entirely on how its mounted.

Surprised no one else has added comments yet, i'm sure there are quite a few member's here who do have working sounds and may have methods to speaker mounting.

There should never be a short air path between the front of the cone and the back, else the out of phase sounds will cancel each other, and there should be a clear path from one side of the speaker to the open air.  Apart from that, it really isn't rocket science until you consider HiFi, which we generally aren't.
Speakers tend to be heavier the more power they can handle, either because of pure size, or solid construction, or both.  This can become a serious consideration for stability or just trimming.
