What bow thruster?
« on: June 17, 2011, 04:21:12 pm »

Looking to install a bow thruster in a Robbe Happy Hunter.

Beats me why almost no one offers them with 12v motors? (The Marx unit is a bit large for this boat, imho).

But from the available units with ~25mm tubes (Graupner/Robbe/Raboesch/whomever)... which are preferred for general happiness of function and long life?

Are any of them IMpossible for swapping out motors? I'm sure I can find a 400-size motor to run on 12v...

Thx, PM

Dont forget, it does not really matter what the voltage of the motor is on the bow thruster, as to gte it to work properly, its always better to run it through an "esc", like you would a drive motor, so the voltage will vary and give you better control over the thruster power setting, so you can just use "light joystick control" and ease the boat sideways, or give it full stick and hit fuull power so to speak.

I have a 7.2v graupner  thruster in my boat and the boat runs 12v main batteries.

I would not really recommend using a couple of micro switches to swop polarity on the thruster wires to change its direction over and it will always be in use on full power and that will rerely be needed in such mode.

True... was certainly planning on the ESC, and with any radio having end-point control I can prevent the application of 100% power... but I still need to guess at those end points, to avoid emmitance of the magic smoke...
