Speed controller help - from a Newbie
« on: July 01, 2011, 01:04:57 pm »

Hi all,

Having just joined this forum, this is my first post - and I am asking for help please. I have just acquired a Robbe Lehmar Coastguard boat and straight away managed to fry one speed controller as the previous owner did not disconnect the red wire from it to the TX - BANG! Anyhow that has been sorted by installing a Mtronics Viper 40 which works fine. I know what I should do is to probably buy a 2nd Viper so the controllers match, but funds are tight at the moment.

The other controller (pictured below) I know nothing about, and can't find a way to programme it. I have tried various combinations of connecting it up to the battery and then moving the TX stick forwards, backwards, to neutral etc, but nothing happens. I can't find a brand name anywhere on it - nor a set-up button. When I do a Google search for the model number (RCE100A) all I get is Align speed controllers and can't find a match.

Currently the speed controller is working, but I am running the engine with full vertical trim up and the motor is still chattering - so it really needs to be calibrated properly. Does anyone have any ideas as to how to do this please?

Thanks in advance,
Mark

HI Fellow member I have checked with Slough models and this speedo is for model helicopters only. No reverse fitted on this speedo if you need more info please contact Slough models on 01753 522222or check out  align.com.tw Looking at this site I think most of the speedo they make are for aircraft / helicopters.

Stan, the esc shown in the piccy is not an Align heli esc, this one's a brushed esc.

Markie, sorry but I can't identify it yet, apart from they were available 'sometime' from Smart-RC in Malaysia, so I'm guessing it's likely to be an old esc.

Thanks to you both for your rapid replies... I too think it is a bit ancient as I think the long-defunct Robbe kit was built around 1999-2001. It still is a bit of a mystery ESC though, isn't it?
Anyhow - thanks for making a start in your joint detective work!

Hi all,

I don't know if this helps but have posted a couple of pics of the boat in question.

The boat has all the toys including working lights, fire monitors that spray water, the Robbe additional sound card with a ship's horn, and "blues & twos" with the flashing blue lights, sirens and a working radar too. The boat came complete with a 6 ch 40Mhz TX, and no less than 4 battery chargers (as on board there is a 6v lead-acid battery for the RX and a 12v one for all the accessories). Also included was a Ripmax Pro Peak fast charger for the motor batteries. The motors are water-cooled 700 series and the four crew were also included, although are more like 1:12th scale than 1:10th.

I paid £270 for the whole lot, which I have no idea whether this was good or bad value - but really liked the boat with all the toys and that was that. All I need now is a bigger pond (or smaller boat)!

No Stan - I have not. Being new here I don't know how personal messages work - should I not get an email to my address advising me of this? If so, I have not as of yet - sorry!

I think youve done well price wise buying this boat. Ive got one but sadly some bits are missing. May i give a
word of caultion. These boats are fast and can flip over beware! This model new was very expensive and i
understand only sold for a short time. Because of a licencing problem with the makers of the real boat. John.

Thanks for that John. Yeah - since starting this thread I have done some research on the interweb and with all the bits and bobs and extras I am North of £1000 at new (2001) prices - so not bad eh? Also I have seen a couple of vids on YouTube and, yes, this is one fast boat indeed. To be honest, I am more into the scale stuff. I have a Schaarhorn and an RC live steam Windermere launch "Topaz" from Martin, Howes & Bayliss - but this little buggy just took my fancy.

If there are any bits you need, pls let me know as I have a few extra bits which I don't need.

Thanks for your positive response.

HI Mark. Many thanks for our conversation this evening. It is far safer to be over the top than under. Let me know how the model performs when you have got all the electronics sorted out.

Thanks to all on this forum (in particular to Ron Dean at Dean's Marine and Stan from The Kirklees MBC) I have now sorted out the speed controller problems. I think the reason the 1st one blew up is the hot red wire was left connected to the receiver box - which is not so clever when using an external battery source - I am told. Anyhow I have managed to retro-fit 2 new Viper Marine 40 speed controllers. Both calibrated fine and under load tests all seems to be working fine.

Thanks to all who have given me good advice on this forum, and also given me the confidence to get my soldering iron out - something I would not have been brave enough to contemplate until I enrolled in this very helpful forum.

Once again thanks to all!

The esc in question, was a copy made in Hong Kong/ China about 5 years ago, they were notorious for melting or blowing out at low amps, normally about 30 amps or so. Nest thing to do is. Throw it away!
