MTRONKIS MARINE VIPER 25- CAN I LIMIT THE REVERSE SPEED ?
« on: July 04, 2011, 02:13:17 pm »

 stupid question probably....but here goes,

had a viper 25  ESC on the bench for some time as it came out of a model which is in for a refit, as usual once installed i discarded the set up instructions as its straightforward....

( turn it on, press the set up button,  set forward, set reverse and jobs a good un...) or so i thought

i refitted the ESC into a different model this weekend to test the motor and the handling- set the ESC as before   and away we go....

ESC works perfectly, i get slow gradual increase in power from 0-100% in forward and astern

the ' new' boat is a launch and the stern is alot lower....

- now if i apply full astern the boat  virtually drags itself under the water...... does anyone know if you can limit the power in reverse so we dont drag the stern under -

and my son  will be the main user of the model....so telling him to go easy on the left stick wont work !!!

i guess the set up instructions would have told me if this was possible ( but i dont have them now {:-{) can anyone enlightmn me  ?

i did try re-setting the set up process with  the reverse stick only being  half way back on the transmitter but this makes no difference...

maybe i should look at aonther ESC with settings for this model, can anyone recommend one then ?

thanks in advance

hi

Looking at the instructions for the 20amp version, which I assume would be the same for the 25, you can set a delay for or turn off reverse, but you cannot limit it.

Did you ever use one bearing the name SolidState or modelcontrollers.com?

You could always make a "mechanical" limiter.... a bar, tab, cam, lolly stick across the transmitter throttle stick to limit the 'reverse' throw....

..... just thinking out loud.  :-)

Just a thought, when you set up the ESC, go full forward with the throttle stick, back to centre, then just a touch to reverse.   See if this limits your reverse throttle.   Pete

If you are using a Spektrum DX6i or higher you can adjust the sevo travel from 0% to 125% so you could have 100% forward or what ever you want reverse!

As it has to be progammed to reverse would not only moving the stick part way back give partial reverse? Will
try on one of my Vipers. John.

Have you considered that the motor runs at different speeds between forwards and backwards.

The reverse may be faster revolutions. The answer might be to reverse the wiring to the motor and swap the prop from RH to LH  (or the other way around)

Also thinking out loud.   :D

Is it worth playing with the throttle trim before / during / after set up?

Trying to think aloud  ok2

tried that all it does is bring the max power on reverse at say half the normal stick travel, - it still gives 100% of the power to the motors at what is perceived to be the end of the stick travel

thanks longshanks this only resets the neutral position too,  meaning the boat constatly creeps and the audible whine from the controller as the motors rotate very slowly....

I have tried limiting the reverse on an Mtroniks speed control in the past, with a Futaba 6EXA using the end point adjustments. It worked for about about 5 minutes and then returned to full forward/full astern as soon as I turned off the set and turned it back on again. They are not the brightest intelligent speed controls. Good news, the Ripmax range of Marine Speed Controls are all half speed reverse, Bad News, they are all currently out of stock with Ripmax with no expected delivery date! Might be worth phoning about though.

I think I got the effect wanted by fiddling the setup - Stick at neutral, start switching on, set forward by pushing the stick forward, then, with sleight of hand and a quick fiddle with the trim slider, tell it that full reverse is stick full back plus the max slide.  For live use, full forward for the ESC  is remembered as full stick forward, but stick full reverse is no longer full power at the ESC.
