Steam Launch Amazon detail
« on: July 20, 2011, 07:51:45 am »

When the time came to put on the name AMAZON I went to the local signwriter under the impression that some old craftstman would come out with his palette and brush and painstakingly paint on the name by hand. What actually happened was that a 17 years of age girl took me through the various fonts that appeared to be appropriate and ran it off the computer, walked out to the boat and placed it on, pulling off the backing sheet leaving a faultless image.

The timber shown is Honduras Mahogany a plank of which cost a small fortune and much of it ended up as sawdust.

The white paint was applied by a local car repair shop that specialised in prestigious cars. When I turned up the following day to collect it I found that so many coats had been applied that it felt as if the paint, 2 part epoxy was about 1/16 of an inch thick. It felt bombproof, hard and smooth. Everyone gathered around to see my reaction. Apparently the apprentices were on it all day.

The optional tillers were made as a labor of love, the mahogany being so beautiful to work with I just kept churning out different versions.

The transom has a human like curve to it and the rudder sets it off, this again being an enjoyable task just trying to get the aesthetics right.

The engine is not kept polished but it should be and as I write this I form a resolve to buy some brasso tomorow.

e what I thought and it seemed that the apprentices had spent the whole day on this job.

The positioning of the text and photos in the previous post have been fooled around with by some computer gllitch and I am too scared to try and fix it up in case I lose the lot.

Thanks. Here she is at speed and she really is getting a move on the ST Compound Twin working hard.

I asked a certain colleague for a crew, and the closer they looked like Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn the better. This is what I got, the girl is OK, much prettier than Katherine but the man is only reluctantly allowed in the launch as he comes across as being seriously troubled. And it is not a portrait of the launch's owner either.

Lovely looking boat Sandy, very realistic on the water and the crew will make her even better. Dont worry about a resemblance, once she is a few yards from the bank nobody will be able to tell anyway. Could we please have a close-up and some details about the boiler, it looks very compact for one that produces enough steam for a ST twin. Regards, Ian.

Casing makes it look very "Yarrowish"

The photos show the Mendip boiler sold by Cheddar some years back. Gas or coal fired. Produces far more steam than the ST twin needs. The photo showing the fire in the firebox was taken at the start of firing up, with mineral turps soaked wood commencing the process.
