True or false?
« on: July 28, 2011, 06:55:09 pm »

Hi. Long story short. I was told batteries with different voltage cannot be interchanged. For example a 7.2 V battery cannot be used in a 9.6 V boat. Is this true? I just put a 9.6v battery in what I presumed a 7.2v boat. Result. Power. Forgive me I am new to RC boats but would like to quiz ur minds on this subject. Thank you for your time.

Well, "it depends"  :}

If you had delicate electronics involved then you could either blow them with too much power or have them do nothing with too little.

Otherwise, bigger batteries will run motors faster but consequently hotter. Not necessarily a good thing.

Most boats are set upto run as made. The speed controller may take more voltage If its car derived then
7.2v may be its limit.Most Boat esc/s can take 12v Hitec only 8.4. Find out what make and type your esc is.
then advise can be given.Most motors have a label giving voltage.The higher the volts the more power at a
limit. Heat build up and shorter life can result. Try it and keep an eye on motor temp. Think of volts
as pressure, amps the amount.Thats why 12v ac will not kill you but 240 may. Greater push can flow
through the body.John.

And the speed (RPM) of a DC motor is proportional to the voltage it is fed.  So a motor that will turn 5,000 RPM on 6 VDC will turn about 10,000 RPM on 12 VDC.  And the centrifugal stress on the rotor and bearings is proportional to the SQUARE of the speed.
