hello all

i am trying to think of a way the Model Hovercraft Assoiation can display our models on water as sometimes we dont have access to land or very short grass i have looked into inflateable pools but these cost £1000 plus in the past we have used 4x2 timber on edge and screwed together then a large tarp in the middel full of water but this is very labour intensive and required a lot of timber anyone get any suggestions

One way is to hire a small Transit sized pick up truck with a demountable body...arrive on scene, drop the body off on a piece of level ground, pop your tarpaulin in position and fill it up...if you ask nicely, a local farmer may have a water bowser he'd be willing to use to fill up your makeshift pool for the price of a bottle of scotch...

Or, if you ask very nicely and you're at a show for charity, the Fire Brigade may come along and fill/empty your pool....again, a bottle of something suitable may help.

make a large round pool. like a kids paddling pool. cut out a big circle then stitch a fence all the way around the edge. it only has to be a couple of inches high enough to make a deep puddle really. like this but bigger:

because the pool is a circle the sides support themselves. After all your a club of hovercraft builders so im sure youl all be able to pitch in with a bit of sewing sein as youl have had all that practice making miles of rubber skirt amongst  yourselves!  :-))

another way is too make 4 massive sausages joined at the ends to make a square then in flate these with a bouncy castle pump to get the frame and lie your tarpolin over the top like you have done in the picture. intially these ideas are both labour intensive to begin with but once there made you just fold em up when your moving about. I dont know about your supply of water thats just another complication.

Borrow two extending ladders and separate them out into the four ladder sections, these are easily lashed together with rope and the tarpaulin is fixed onto the ladders. A 10 minute job for 1 person to build it.

If more ladders are available then extend them rather than splitting them, thus making a much bigger pool. We have used a 10metre square pool built this way with not problems, other than the amount of water needed.

This pool is 3 metres by 4.5 metres

hi guys

as you can see the pool need to be big as some of our models are 4 ft long and require a large space perform well i do like the ladders idea i will bring that up at the next meeting the idea of make 4 massive sausages joined at the ends to make a square then in flate these with a bouncy castle pump to get the frame and lie your tarpolin over the top but where could such a thing be made this would prob be the better option as it would fold up for transport

as for the water yes its always an issue at the above picture was at a hovercraft race meeting and one of the members brings a pump we use from the lake other times we have used a bowzer but these can be hard to get hold of

yes there are lakes in my aera but we are nation wide so not easy to meet up at a particular lake i operate with Kirklees model boat club most sundays

didnt you like my circle idea then probably too small. As far as space to build massive sausages use the garden, use the club house  %%  its not a hurdle to hard to jump if needs must.  :-)) i was thinking of a shortcut and using inflatable bufferes used in bowling alleys but struggling to find them atm.

ahh well my grammer is no better  regarding theraband  does sound interesting but i would need a sample to look at its a commont thing everyone thinks we need rubber to make the skirts from same as the full size but even they only use rubber a few mm thick and the racing type use a thicknylon

it may be too think for the main part of the skirt but it may be usefull for the fingers, All commercial hovercraft now have a bag and finger skirt see the pic below the skirt is made up of a large bag type skirt then fingers are attached to this to increase the hover height, allow greater flexability over obstacles and these are all separate so any damage the its just one to replace not the entire skirt

hi,
the way i see it, you need large area but not deep. I would buy the largest liner/tarp as possible and depending on the levelness of the ground place 3x2 studding around the edge to form a frame, pegged to the ground with tent pegs. I would use the weight of the water to hold the liner down and peg the liner in place with elastic loops.
if the pool aint level then you will have to pack up the low side.
hope this helps
ro88o0
ps our pool is 24ftx28ftx18" deep it holds approx 5500 gals

thats similar to the old system we had which was good but very labour intensive and required carrying the timber about thei idea thing would be as above a long air tight bag that can be folded round on itself wiht pegs to keep inplace and the as you say put the tarp in and fill with water using the weight to hold it down

Is this for use at shows? Ever thought about pitching in with other clubs who might want something similar, then you could get the real deal. Those inflatable pools do look the business.

yes this is for shows but we only do one big show at the moment the SWMEE and they have one set up we do other shows be these are independent such as the hovercraft museum hovershow

the hovercraft club great brittan race meetings

HMS sultan summer show

Beale Park

we have got an evant in september Seahorse 50 is being organised by the Hovercraft Society, to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of UK Military Hovercraft involvement.

a pool would be nice here but we are right next to the sea and depending on the weather we may do a mass beach landing
