Help with 50A Tornado ESC
« on: July 30, 2011, 11:11:46 am »

Hi, I have just purchased a Tornado 50A Marine ESC to run my Torpedo 800 Motor. For some reason the motor is running very slowly with this esc, i have tried the terminals the other way around and it makes no difference, it is as if it is struggling to run the motor so i tried it on a 500 motor which i had lying around and it does exactly the same thing, runs extremely slow. Does anybody know what this could be?

Have you measured the voltages with a meter ?

OVERLANDER TORNADO 50AMP WATERPROOF MARINE SPEED CONTROLLER FORWARD AND REVERSE MARINE ESC-50. THE HM-50 ESC ALLOWS REMOTE CONTROL OF BOAT ELETRIC MOTORS FROM AN RC SYSTEM. WHEN CONNECTED WITH MOTOR, IT IS CAPABLE OF SUPPLYING UP TO 50 AMPS (FORWARD) OR 20A (BACKWARDS) OF CONTINUOUS MOTOR CURRENT. ITS INTEGRATED BATTERY ELEIMATOR CIRCUIT(BEC) POWERS THE RECIEVER FROM THE MOTOR BATTERY, WITH AUTOMATIC CUTOFF OF THE MOTOR POWER TO PRESERVE RECEIVER POWER AS THE BATTERY BECOMES DEPLETED. IT IS SMALL AND POWERFULL, WATERPROOF, CAN BE USED FOR DIFFERENT TYPE OF BOAT. WORKING VOLTAGE 5-10 CELLS, 6-12VOLTS CONTINUOUS LOAD CURRENT 50A FORWARD, 20A REVERSE WEIGHT 82G BEC 5VOLT DIMENSION (MM) 42X47X13

I have several of these and they are a no brainer but if you connect your wiring the wrong way round you will get 20A forward and 50A reverse.

Also some motors run faster one way than the other.

Thanks Richard, i know it seems so easy to get it going but this one just does not seem to want to work. I thought it may be the motor that was knackered but the esc does exactly the same thing when tested with other motors i have, maybe it is a faulty item.  {:-{

Hi Chris
I have never seen this esc,but there could be a few causes.
1 try the motor direct to the battery. If it reves high put some light load on the motor eg you finger on the shaft but it will heat up quickely so be carefull. If the motor runs slowley colud be a flat battery or a faulty battery or faulty motor
2 I know on Mtronics you can set the foward reverse and neutral point and on some set up brake delay etc. Make sure on yours the set up is to default. As for the 20ah in reverse that will not efect the motor when it is NOT under load. on load it may over load the esc.

Ok i am getting somewhere with this esc now, there is no way of setting this speed controller, it has no reset button but i have now got it running at full speed forwards but no reverse whatsoever, can anyone advise me what could be causing this?

Turn everything off, make sure all terminates are connected.
Ensure tx is all set to neutral.
Turn on tx
Turn on rx
Leave. For ten seconds to set
Push forward on throttle channel, motor should run fast on forward
Pull back on throttle to full reverse, should run slower than full forward.
Esc set

Just to follow this up,

I contacted Howes Models where i bought this esc and they kindly asked me to return it for them to test, low and behold after all this it was a faulty speed controlller and was only going one way  {-) I have now been sent a replacement and it works a treat! Thanks guys for all your help on this matter  :-))
