I've just finished an R/C Conversion for this. It was interesting to say the least!!! I had to scratch build the rudder and prop shaft supports from brass as the ones supplied in the kit are not substantial enough. The steering servo is a miniature one mounted in front of the cabin under the deck and the rudder is controller via steering lines that run over the deck as per the prototype. I had to purchase non scale miniature pulleys for the steering lines to run through and also used brass bottle screws on the steering lines to enable adjustment to be made.
The running gear at the moment comprises 20mm 'D' type props from Raebosch -, one L/H & one R/H, attached to Graupner 2mm prop shafts. The motors are graupner speed 300's and I am using a couple of forward only ESC's which run through a mixer. Power is from a Turnigy 3Ah Nano tech Lipo cell. The drive gear is currently being experimented with as I am not happy with the steering, as although I scaled the rudder up, the turning circle is a bit large - I think I may have to go to using a couple of Viper marine 15 amp Fwd/Rev controllers, although the weigh concerns me a bit.

The boat looks good on the water though and I am more than happy with it, - the next one will be the ELCO - that's geting three brushless motors so should be a bit quick. I have attached some photos if anyone is interested. Any questions please ask.

Thats an impressive conversion!

Boat looks good and you've done well to keep the weight down. I must admit I didn't think it poss to get both speed and waterline

Which Speed 300 are you using 6 or 7 volt? If its the 7v how about mtroniks microviper 10. http://www.mtroniks.net/details1.asp/ProductID/185/sid/2/MicroViper-marine10.htm

2 x microviper = 9gms less than 1 x viper 15.

Looking forward to details of your Elco build - I have one waiting in the wings....

Thanks for the info - I have just ordered a pair of Microvipers from Mtroniks , bit of a bargain as they are selling ex demo stock for £17.00 ea.
The motors I am using are the 6v ones as they rev a bit higher at around 29000 rpm. They are both fused at 7.5 amp each and haven't blown yet! So should be OK - I did think about brushless but fitting the cooling in a hull this small would be a bit of pain!
I could reduce the weigh a bit further by using a smaller lipo, such as a 1.3 or 1.8 amp - maybe something for the future
Once the new controllers are installed I will upload some more pics.

But if you reducce the weight will it not sit higher in the water? and to my untrained eye it seems to e sitting just right as it is

I tested the waterline last night in the Domestic float tank with two viper marine 15's in various locations and it was a bit lower so the next thing will be to review it with a pair of microviper 10 speed controllers and the mixer unit - I'll get there in the end!!!!!!
Also the attitude of the boat will change when it's making headway

I would imagine he is juggling with grammes (very small ozs,)

I cant find the weight of the original but I suspect the total weight of the model boat is about 0.5 kgs 18 ozs.

Did find a bit of history of MAS 568 !

The night between 2nd and 3rd August, Mas 573 (capitano di corvetta Castagnacci), 568 (sottotenente Legnani) and 569 (sottotenente Ferrari) attacked, southwest from Kerch, heavy cruiser Molotov ("Kirov" class) (2) and naval destroyer Kharkov ("Leningrad" class ), which were on intercept German transports mission. the two large Soviet units, commanded by Commodore N.E. Basisty went near the coast, opening fire, with their 181, 122 and 100 mm. guns, against objectives situated between Iwan Baba and Feodosia. Realizing the great danger (the attack of a powerful 11.500 tons cruiser, armed with nine 181 mm. guns, against a flotilla of German small barges, which were in that part of sea, certainly should have been ended in total disaster), Mas 573 and 568 commanders decided to immediately attack the large enemy unit. Torpedoes from Mas 573 missed, but Legnani's Mas 568 went at very short distance from the cruiser and launched its two torpedoes: the first missed, while the second succeeded in hitting the aft hull of Molotov cruiser, which, meanwhile, was hammering Italian units with its 100 and 45 mm. guns. After the strike, Mas 568 tried to losing touch with the adversary with a quick evasive maneuver, but was chased at full speed by destroyer Kharkov, which meanwhile was arrived to help the Molotov. With a remarkable cold blood, commander Legnani ordered his men to drop from rear all the ten little depth charges the unit had aboard, triggering them on the minimal explosion depth. Depth charges exploded in a fast succession, quite ahead of Kharkov prow, damaging it so badly to force the Russian destroyer to stop the chase. Either Molotov and Kharkov retired from the combat toward east to reach as soon as possible their base. Mas 568, which within only 15 minutes succeeded in damaging the two enemy units, could return to Yalta, also if damaged and attacked by some Soviet aircraft, drawn by explosion's lights.

Thanks for the info longshanks,for such small boats, they did pretty well - I was at the South west Model show at Shepton Mallet in May this year -(I had just started the build of this particular boat) and a guy stopped to look at it - he was pretty knowledgeable and it transpired that his grandfather had served on a MAS boat during WW2 in the Med during the battle for Malta! He did say that although they were quick his Grandad didn't like sailing on them.

Anyway the microvipers arrive and I installed them together with a W mixer - I also changed the bottle screws for bowsies as this makes it easier to adjust the rudder position. I had the boat in the domestic test tank again and the water line looks ok. I will be able to try a full test on Sunday down at the boating lake. I have attached some more photo's to show the internal layout - it's quite crowded in their now!!

Your boat is fantastic!
I am a modeller from Romania....and italian boats visit my country in 1942. Unfortunately...is just few pictures with them in Black Sea. I use 2 SPEED 300 ...just like you!

Many thanks for the compliments. I'm afraid I don't have any movie footage of the boat yet. I hope to at a later date. I have changed the 300 motors back to 280's with two speed controllers through a mixer - the reason being that the amp draw on the motors kept blowing 10volt fuses! I will post more photo's when I can but I am currently busy converting the Italeri Elco to R/C. There is a thread on that on this site in the build forums if you are interested.

I have an ELCO too...but now I,m working on MAS 568.
Tell me please if the boat, with 280 motors.....still run as a fast boat.
I try to not change the SPEED 300 motors....I try with POWER 400 but no diference on the water.

and this is the enemy...watching on my boat!!!

Yes, running with 280's still made the boat fast enough, it's important to keep the weight down as well as this is a very small boat.

Can you tell me the weight of two viper marine ESC + mixer. I use in my boat one Mtronik TIO marine 30 (30amp) =55g
My SPEED 300 motors are 7,2 V variant....with 10A max consuption.
I hope they didn,t draw more amps than ESC can provide.
Tomorow, if the wether permit, I will try the boat on a pond.....and do a new movie.
Until that..I work to rebuild all masts....using brass hollow pipe from Griffon.

Today I test my boat at the lake.
Despite my boat is not finished and the wind makes waves...the run is great!
It move fast...the bow is lifted at full speed...and the rudder (Robbe rudder for S100 boat) work farr better than previous (kit rudder that I spend time to mount on a metal shaft).
Unfortunately...I was alone ..and I can,t do any pictures.
Next wekend..if the lake will not feeze...I will do more tests..and some photos!

Tell me please what kind of mixer you have...and what is the weight if the item.
Is interesting to use 2 microviper ESC...but I have no mixer..

The mixer I'm using is an Mtronik W tail mixer - its about the same size and weight as the Viper 10ESC

Initialy, I want to made the rudder as yourth....buying mini puley (metal) from JB model.
But I see that is difficult to open the boat if rudder setup is identic with real one, especialy if you want to not demage something on deck.
This is the model rudder...prepare for RC sail.....actualy not in use because steering effect is ZERO.

In the past...I buy from SIERRA..one rudder especially done for 1/35 S-100 german schnellboot.
I try yesterday with dhis setup......and I have good steering effect, especially at high speed...when at the back of boat appear a great hole....50% of rudder is in air.

And this is my servo (Futtaba S3110 = 15g) house ....scratch from stirene and a lot of superglue!

Thanks for the info - I cam considering making an oversleeve for my rudder. I would fit it when running the boat on water and then remove it for exhibiting at shows. I have attached some photos's to show you how my rudder set up.
The rudder shaft is attached to a brass plate that I pinned to to the deck, the two forks on the shaft locate into the tubes on the back of the transom to hold the rudder shaft in place once the deck is screwed down.
I have also attached a photo of the ESC's and mixer inside the boat.

I like very much how you solve the problem with rudder.....is more accurate than mine.
Initially, I want to do something like your system.
I like very much how you solve problem with proppeler...I will do for my boat, in the future, something similar.
Just now..I work on the gun postament...that alow the Breda canone to turn left/right, eventually with firing sound.
I hide a modified micro servo just under the gun....and now I scratch the linkage rod.
I will post pictures when is finished.

Hi Martin
It's actually a W Mixer, the ESC plugs from each motor are connected to two of the inputs and the rudder to the 3rd - this allows the boat to spin on it's own axis at slow speeds , the only problem I currently have is turning at speed as the rudder is not effective in the wake from the two props. I also have to try and increase the servo throw but I'm not quite sure how to do this at the moment other than lengthening the arm on the rudder - that may be my next fix! - its all trial and error but it keeps the grey matter ticking over!

Today I receive 2 micro esc from Mtronik...and I must start to change hardware setup.
Meantime..I try to use 2 Graupner house coupling to fix motors directly on shafts tubes.

This is my final setup: 2Graupner Speed 300 7,2V variant, 2 marine micro viper ESC, Graupner coupling, slightly modified for Speed 300.

This is the ring that I need for mount Speed 300 motors to Graupner Power 400 coupling:

And...finaly....the servo modified and install under the gun....to enable 360 degrees rotation>
