suitable battery for boat
« on: August 18, 2011, 06:17:54 pm »

Hi guys sorry to ask this BUT
I have just put my boat into the bath with a meter in series to measure the amps( Battery may be a bit iffy or may be the charger see earlier thread 6volt lead acid). I have run the motor direct from the battery and I am getting approx a 3 to 3.5 amp draw ,this is also while resticting the boats desire to hit the other end of the bath.I am using a 6volt 4.5A  battery, which I was going to order another one in case I do have a iffy one.Do you think this is a good enough size. I have recently been educated about amps hour against time run but the measured 3 to 3.5A  was direct so therefore would not be sending the boat on the pond at full speed ahead all the time. What I do not want to do is ruin another battery by having to smaller a size any comments would be welcome .As always thanks in advance for any help/ advice.(learning fast O0)

guitarman,

You should not ruin a 4.5 battery, and I doubt if you have done so with the one you have, BUT you are not going to get a very long run time from a 4.5Ah battery. If you have space and can take the extra weight, then a larger capacity (greater Ah) would give longer run time, and would also take longer to charge with your charger.

What sort of boat is it?  If it is a 'speed boat', it would be more suited to NiMh batteries, but then you would need a different charger. A scale boat should be capable of taking the extra weight of a bigger SLA.

Thanks barriew
It is a 1/24 tid tug. you are right it would take the extra weight no trouble .its just that that battery mention fits nice in the front end of the boat. When you say not a long run time what would your estimate be?

Hi guitarman. The motors on my ferry consume a similar ampage and are powered by a single 12V 7A SLA battery and it will last all day. I would estimate that you would get at least a couple of hours, probablt more out of your battery when at scale speeds.
