Flying boats...

Has anyone built a flying boat, such as the Catalina or similar, to use purely as a boat? I'm just wondering if the idea is feasible...I fancy a Cat, not to actually fly, but just to sail as a boat.

Hi Rich, email recieved today, hope it helps.

Hi Richard
With regard to the aircraft first I must tell you that it was an early
one and I would hope improved by now.  The engines in mine are brush
type gl-370  on nicad 8.4 v battery It had 2 right handed props which
caused ground looping  no rudder in water crashed when finally got
airbourne having torn off starbd float a number of times ..modified
length and fitted 2  three bladed props handed pitch reduced so
increased battery to 11.5 v however the extra weight is too much to get
airbourne on the step yes no ground loops in stable wind conditions
hope this info some use
regards  Archie

dbninja, a member, has successfully built a wonderful seaplane, and last sunday was taxiing on the lake, taking off from the water, flying and landing again on the water at Taylor park, the home of st helens model boat club

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6CtyXQUzwY&feature=related

brushless motor, with small 3 cell lipo to keep weight down. He also changed the prop, to give it very docile flying behaviour as a number of members of the club are learning to fly with it! :-))

That's nice, looks very steady in the air.

I don't want mine to fly, I don't fly fixed wing stuff.  No, I just want to use it purely as a boat, just for something different on our local lake.

Seem to recall one of the Toy Boat Mags showing a water based (Non Flying) Sunderland type. IIRC plans were available. Tried "Search" (Yes, I know) on this forum? I remember a posting about the float based Spitfire, may be something in that thread.

  Regards  Ian.

PS. Have a plan for a BV (Blohm und Voss) single seat WW2 flyingboat you could detune for it to flob about on the surface.
