ARGH!
« on: September 05, 2011, 03:09:04 pm »

I've just done my back in!
OUCH!
I was only looking at the job in question. I hadn't even started! I had to crawl back into the house.
It's not FAIR!
Why does it wait 'till I feel like I've got my exercise levels back up and weight under control again to cripple me?

That's happened to me as well.  My theory is it's a trapped nerve in the spine which gets caught when bending.

If you can go for a walk, keeping upright it helps the situation sometimes.   :-))

Been there done that too many times!

I find the best way to deal with it is play the sympathy bit when swmbo is around, but when she isnt just try and do as much as you can! :-))

Seriously though, I tend to think that total rest often doesnt help with a bad back, and I know a physio that agrees - depending on the cause of course!

Nothing at all Cornishman, which is why it's in "Chit-Chat".....unless you count the fact that the job I was thinking about was a storage rack for canoes.
Thanks for the sympathy though.

Thanks all!

I've managed to move as far as the cake isle of the local co-op. It was a slow journey, but I made it!

I hate things like this. It always seems to happen just when I'm starting to feel good about myself and then I have to comfort eat. I guess it's self inflicted from that point of view.

You have my heartfelt (backfelt) sympathy. Many years ago (back in the '80s) I slipped a disc - the big one just above the pelvis - suffered for about 12 years, as my doctor said that the operation to fix it was unpleasant and had a low success rate. Eventually I had had enough of the agony and decided to go for the op. It turns out that my doctor would have been better off serving burgers in a well-known chain restaurant. The op was fairly simple and was a 98% success (I say 98% as there will always be a weakness as part of the disc was removed).

Anyway, it gave me a new lease of life and I now enjoy hiking, cycling and of course model boating.

However, last week, I was 'playing' with my 1/16 Trent on the lake and didn't realise that the water level was a couple of inches lower than normal. I reached down and lifted the boat out of the water and immediately got a shooting pain through the back. However, it's now feeling a bit better, so I guess that it was muscular, rather than a disc again. I made sure to keep moving as much as possible - not easy when my shifts involve me sitting down for most of a 12-hour stint.

The moral of the story...

Even when it all seems to be working OK - BE CAREFUL!  :-))

Reminds me of my ex father in law (Cornish), taking stick in the pub from emmets (foreigners). Turned to them and asked "If were so daft, how come you save up for 50 weeks to come down here and we can take it all off you in two weeks"  {-)

Last year 4.5 million visitors spent £1,210 million

PS I'm not Cornish only lived here for 40 years  :-))

I am CORNISH  AND PROUD OF IT !  If you come down here with your bad back, try walking down a steep hill, that will naturally make you try to get upright!!
PS when Longshanks talks about "Emmett's" for those who don't know, its what we natives call visitors, and is Cornish for "ANTS" Emmett's/ants swarm all over the place geddit ? LOL. Personally I know our visitors are a necessity, but I prefer to call some of them "PILES" because they are a pain in the...... What are visitors called in other areas ?

Rmaddock,
Sorry for your back problem, sufferred with the same for years (from apprentice days..... many years).
Was told of a treatment that worked for a number of friends, so I gave it a try. Gentle, no harsh medicine in any shape or form.
Had an hours treatment on 2 Sept, result is almost magical, no pain or restriction in movement. Oh the delight of free movement with no pain!
For info look up Bowen-Therapy.
Usual disclaimers, I'm just a very satisfied customer, well worth a serious look at.

Good luck,
Regards.

When the miners families came down from the Welsh Valleys to the beach at Barry Island, before Thatcher destroyed the Valleys, visitors were known as "Sionnies" - pronounced 'Shonnies', Welsh for Johnny. Barry Island beach (Whitmore Bay) was also known as "Ayerbutt Bay" because every time one of the Sionnies met another from his village/pit, he'd say "Ayer Butt" - "Hello mate". Happy Days  :-)

before Thatcher destroyed the Valleys,

Of course there are some people who may say that the responsibility for that lies with a certain Mr Scargill - however not an argument for a model boat forum.....

I know, maybe I should have posted that in chit-chat. But she was out to destroy Scargill and the best way to do it was through those who couldn't fight back.

Hi Spook,

I drove up from Newport through Risca, Crosskeys (where my family still live) and Cwmcarn a few weeks ago. I drove past the old Hafodyrynys colliery and all the huge waste* heaps have been transformed into woodlands and parkland. The Ebbw is flowing clean again instead of the black sludge that I remember from my childhood, so I suppose some good must have come from all the pain of the Thatcher/Scargill conflict, but obviously it will take a long time for the scars to heal.

Dave.
