what to do with long leads
« on: September 15, 2011, 09:57:52 am »

hi guys.  would it be better to cut to length servo and rx cables (not the aerial)  that are too long and put a new plug on or to roll up the excess and tuck it away out of sight somewhere. i'm thinking of whether rolling up could be a potential source of interference but obviously the easiest way to fix the problem.         craig

Coiling the excess and tucking it away in a tidy manner will do no harm.  If interference shows itself, something else is causing the problem.  Not mixing the servo signal wires with the power wires is a good idea, though.

I never cut servo or rx leads. Next boat you use them in my be too short!

Coil them up if need be and use sandwich bag ties to keep them all neat and coiled.

Use a ferrite ring and wrap the lead around, reduces/removes possible interference. Link is to Maplins but they are also available from model shops.

If there was no interference in the first place, coiling/wrapping is unlikely to introduce any.  Adding ferrite bits is overkill, unwanted extra weight in a small model, and costs a lot more than a tie-wrap.  They might have a use on motor leads, but distorting a sharp-edged signal in the servo leads is unlikely to do any favours.  If it was extended servo leads, that would be a different story altogether, but only if interference was being picked up.
