MTB 104/105
« on: September 19, 2011, 10:36:20 pm »

These were two experimental boats built by Thornycroft early in WW2. MTBs 106/107 were essentially similar but had unstepped hard chine hulls. The plan I've attached has been offered for sale on Ebay recently; it seems well drawn and credible except for the torpedo tube arrangement. I know that Bloodhound had something like this, but this hardly seems likely on a boat only 45ft long. Does anyone know anything about this?

The only photo I've been able to find is of MTB 104, but it's a .jpeg and I can't work out how to upload it. It appears to have the usual CMB type torpedo trough.

Jonty,

Is it this one, (according to the info, it's a 1940 'John I. Thornycroft & Co Ltd' drawing)

or this photo of MTB104 which looks suspiciously like the drawing above.

Yes, I found that drawing  and photo on the NMM site. Both are catalogued as MTB 104. The real question is whether 105 actually had a trainable  torpedo tube as indicated by the drawing and model.

There's a book in my local library that lists all MTBs built, next time I'm down town I'll see if it's available.
