Mountfleet Britannia
« on: October 08, 2011, 06:30:46 pm »

Hello!
I think about building a Mountfleet pilot boat Britannia. I do have a Cheddar Puffin which I guess would be a good choice as propulsion but it's with a vertical boiler. Does anybody know if this could be done with it? I have my doubts about stability with vertical boiler and maybe the height could also be a bit critical.
Thanks!

I'm afraid that you will have to obtain a horizontal boiler if you want to use the engine in the Britannia, as there is not enough room underneath the funnel.

It would be well worth the trouble, she would be a great boat with steam power. I am sure there would be a market for your vertical boiler which you could then replace with a horizontal from Maccsteam or Cheddar Valley. Cheers, Ian.

Thank you guys! I was expecting something like this... I might go for another Maccsteam boiler, or even the original puffin horizontal boiler from Stuart. I made very good experience with both of them. Have to think about it because of budget reasons...  {:-{ any experiences with the kit itself?

I've built all three, the are four really, examples based on the drifter hull; the Britannia is the most stable of the three, not that the others are bad I should add. I have sailed mine in the foulest of weather and in relatively high swells without any problem at all, this includes Lake Windermere.

The kit goes together well and you should encounter few if any problems. currently all Mountfleet kits are being upgraded which should make the building experience evenmore satisfying and quicker.

Does anybody have any idea what kind of upgrades they are doing? I tried to contact via Email but got no answer so far.

Would the original horizontal Puffin boiler fit in the Britannia hull? I have read a review where it was written, that there is quite little space once the deck has been fitted.
