Have I left it too long?
« on: October 11, 2011, 05:34:26 pm »

Hi Folks

A little battery advice would be much appreciated please - I looked at some previous posts but I didn't find what I need to know.

I bought all my electrics etc intending to use them pretty quickly and then life got in the way. Hey presto four months has flown by and I have forgotten what the guy in the shop said {:-{. I bought an 'ENERG-PRO NiMH 8.4V SC-3300H FLAT' battery and a RIP MAX PRO PEAK DELTA 3 charger.

Ok, so my problem is that the battery has not been charged or used by me and I have had it four months - is that ok? I ask because I read something a while ago about not letting them go more than three months or below 1V because it is then dangerous? The charger has a choice of using either 2/3.5/5A so what is best for the initial charge? and then for subsequent charges? After that amperage selection the blurb on the box says 'Delta peak sensing detects the full charge and drops back to trickle charging' though I won't be leaving any batteries on trickle if I can help it. I have no previous experience of NiMHs hence the questions.

By the way how would I ever know when the battery is getting towards 1A?

If the batteries were reasonably well charged when you bought them, I doubt if they have dropped below 1v per cell now. You can't do any damage if you connect them to your charger and charge at the lowest setting.
In order to find out if they have dropped below 1volt per cell, you would need a voltmeter. You can buy a digital multi-meter from Maplin for around £5.

Highly unlikely that anything has happened to the batteries...I have batteries here that I having touched for many months and they're still 100% OK.......I just double checked  :-))
