Lifeboats with a difference

Just come across these videos of our French Counterparts to the lads from the RNLI..............and what a nice looking boat too......are any of our french model builders doing anything on thesae lines.....I for one would love to see one.

I'd be very interested to know what she has behind those transome doors as well..........would make a great and different project.

I assume that the first launch was a slow practise one.At over four minutes when time is vital one wonders.It is also interesting to notice the variations in diffrent countrys vessals.The French boat does not have a stepped side to aid pulling swimmers aboard.Whilst German boats always seem to have a rounded structure. Hi Neil, yes it would make a nice model, something different. I can't say I've ever seen one anywhere. I would imagine there's a rib behind the transom door, or maybe it just folds down to make rescues from water level easier? I'm sure someone will know. The one below would make a very nice model too! Dave.  :-))

There is a small RIB just behind the transom. Looks a bit dodgy returning to the big boat, especially if you forget to duck! See this vid here:

Hi Dave - This boat was subject to a Plan Feature in a French Mag, but getting a copy online is proving tricky...

Similar hull to the Port Phillip pilot boat 'Akuna 4'
She was made in Mornington, not far from me so i might be able to visit the factory and ask for plans.

Some of the blurb when she was launched:-
"Built by Victoria's Hart Marine for Port Phillip Sea Pilots, 'Akuna IV' was delivered on June 30. The composite-hulled vessel, designed by Pantocarene Naval Architects, France, has an overall length of 18.55 metres with a length at waterline of 17.4 metres, a beam of 6.14 metres, a draught of 1.55 metres and a depth of 2.3 metres.
 
Displacing 30 tonnes, the vessel is powered by twin Cummins QSK19-M engines, each rated at 597kW at 2,100rpm, with power transferred via twin ZF 2050A, remote mounted, 2.029:1 reduction gears driving twin Teignbridge propellers. The pilot boat has a maximum speed of 30 knots and a cruising speed of 26 knots. Some of the significant elements of this design include its self-righting ability, the NIBS fender system, a "Beak Bow" to reduce pitching, a suspended wheelhouse with consequent reductions in noise and vibration resulting in reduced fatigue on pilots and crew, greater efficiency and less emissions, a composite construction which in turn brings both thermal and acoustic efficiency and lower maintenance costs over the lifecycle of the vessel when compared with other materials and a high standard of finish for pilot and crew comfort.
 
Hart Marine was able to enhance this design with additional engineering features such as five-bladed propellers, which reduce both underwater noise and cavitation, remote mounted gearboxes which enhance performance without more power while reducing noise and vibration and high strength castings for underwater appendages to reduce drag and cavitation, thus reducing the required power output."

There is also another Pilot boat by the same firm. I do not know the name but she has a slightly different superstructure ( better looking? )

The second boat is "Ranger 3" based at Hastings.
Slightly smaller, only 14.3 metre hull length.
At least Hastings is just down the road, rather than having to go right around Port Phillip Bay.  O0

Looks like there getting the orders in.Are the hulls moulded here? As down my way most smaller hulls are made in Poland and fitted out overhere.John.

Hart Marine told me they purchased the boat design - so they will be producing the Pantocarene Beak hulls in Oz under a licence.
They look great on the water don't they.

Looks as if a trip to Hart factory in Mornington and one to Hastings to see the Ranger 3 have to be included in the diary.  :-))
It's a pity that Wyuna 4 is on the other side of Port Phillip Bay but maybe I can persuade SWMBO that we can take the ferry sometime in the summer.
P.S. Martin we need an emoticon for being sea sick.
