Motor id?
« on: November 05, 2011, 10:25:31 am »

Anybody have any ideas as to what this motor is?

On the case are the words:  escap 28 L28 215P 215  and on the other side: RV swiss made 10 89

It's very low on current draw, I had it running in a 24" open speedboat, on a 7.2v 1600m/ah battery pack turning a 30mm 3 blade brass prop, for well over two hours.

Escap is the manufacturer's name - these are extremely high quality motors which (I think) run very efficiently at low RPMs, hence they are sought after by railway modellers for driving small model locomotives.
I had a few last year that I picked up cheap at a show (not knowing what they were). I ended up sellling them on eBay as I got the impression, from what I read about them online, that they weren't really suited for use in model boats. But from reading your description of the motor's performance, I wish I hadn't now!

Thank you for that, Edward...it is certainly a well made motor, the shaft spins as though it's set in bearings. I'd never seen one like it, let alone know what it is...thanks again for the information.

Portescap is the manufacturer's name now - this item looks vaguely similar - probably the same range: http://www.portescap.com/product-89-28L28.html

I have a few motors of this type in my bits box - they are often used for high-quality tape drives and the like. They are multi-pole and the quality is superb. The problem they have is that they obtain high efficiency by using thin precious metal wires for brushes - these have very low friction, but they don't like taking very high currents. Stay within design limits and all will be fine - try and pump a lot of amps through and the brushgear goes....

Cheers DG...it seemed to fine of 7.2v, never even got warm to the touch.

I'm thinking of installing it into a plastic magic project over the winter, undecided as to what yet though. It's a cracking little motor, well worth building a little boat around it.

Portescap are famous for (and probably only make) coreless precision motors.  They are , as you say, superb quality

Because its coreless the usual warning applies - don't run it at high voltage unloaded.
Reason:  the windings are just a copper woven basket held together by resin, and they can "spread" under too high centrifugal force.

keep us in the picture with your build!

Thanks for that Andrew...I think I may well try it out in the old Dragonfish. She was retired from active duty last year after the original motor popped it's electrical clogs, so this motor may push her along nicely. Worth a try!
