Midwest steam engine
« on: November 09, 2011, 12:34:48 pm »

Hi,
I have a choice of powerplants for a Midwest Harbor Master.

1/ Electric drive as I have all the drive train ready.

2/ Steam. The recommended is the Model VI #980
The only hangup I have is having something burning in the boat, might be a common fear with live steam. I need advise on the engine and the fears.

Regards

Both methods of propulsion are of course viable. If you are prepared for the extra cost os steam then why not?Providing the steam plant installation is thought out there is minimal fire risk.Using tinned gas avoids any liquids floating about. You can of course fit a r/c controlled gas cut off valve. Depending on how far you wish to go,you could install automatic boiler controls. Please try to find fellow steamers its the best way to learn. Also ive no idea as to what rules and regs apply where you are.Boiler testing insurence etc.John

The Midwest boiler/engine is designed to use Sterno a jellied alcohol. There is very little chance of mishap if you follow the instructions. Check out the thread on the Midwest Fantail Launch it is very similar to the Harbor Master.

Gerald.

I have built the Midwest Fantail Launch and the Midwest VI steam engine, it would be difficult to set anything on fire with this setup.  You can easily burn your fingers but that's about it!

Hi and thank you for the replies.

I might just be tempted to try one.

Mind you I will have to get it past 'er indoors!
