HM Custom Cutter SENTINEL
« on: November 09, 2011, 09:08:00 pm »

Looking at Model Slipways Cutter "SENTINEL",I'm considering it to be an early Xmas present to my self, I've read a few reviews and a build being done in a German forum ( i only looked at the photos) and was quite impressed, So does any one out there have any input, good, bad or indifferent that may sway me one way or other, On my last kit a lot of the white metal fittings were bad with a lot of adjustments to be made with the body and decking, so please, let me know

Never built a Sentinel but have built a couple of other MS kits and I'd be surprised, nay totally staggered and would need to seek therapy, if there were any problems or issues with MS white metal fittings.  In my humble opinion MS the word bad isnt in their vocabulary.  Their fittings hardly need even to be shown a wire brush to clean them up.  And if there was a problem a phone call would result in them falling over themselves to right any wrongs.  Just my view but maybe others may have a different opinion.

I built a Sentinel back in 2005. It is an excellent kit and made up into a very good model; it looks good and performs beautifully. I agree with Mike as to the quality of the white metal fittings, they are first class, as is the entire kit. Jackie and Lawrie White at Model Slipway are extremely helpful should you need any clarification, which is unlikely. I certainly recommend the kit.

Unlike daveorgan, I have had no problems sailing mine in windy conditions but, having said that, it is vital to keep as much weight as possible low in the hull.

I had no problems that I couldn't solve with a little thought. However, I replaced some of the white metal fittings with carved balsa as I had been told it could be tender. There are several fittings that are high on the mast which were quite heavy so I replaced those as well as the life rafts. Whether it was necessary I don't know but I have no stability problems.

Give it a go I say

O0 Thanks to all that took the time out,to sit and reply (with wisdom) to my concerns, it  seem that MS have a good following, so i will go down that road, also to ensure that weight on the superstructure is reduced,by the way my last build, which is still ongoing,is of a DUKW from Deans Marine, their white metal fittings are c..p,Once again a big thank u to all, This FORUM does work

Model Slipway say in the instructions to keep weight in the hull as low as possible to help stability. They also suggest using buggy pack batteries to keep weight down. However, as I had a number of 6v 4ah SLA batteries I decided to use one of them. I weighed the only buggy pack I had and found that it was almost exactly half the weight of the SLA and, as two buggy packs were needed to power the two motors, weight was therefore not an issue.

As I said in my earlier post, my model sails beautifully in most conditions, and shows no evidence of tenderness in turns even though I used the supplied kit fittings. It has had many outings over the last 5 years, and is still one of my favourite models. I'm sure you won't be disappointed in a Model Slipway kit.
