Four million matchsticks !!!
« on: November 11, 2011, 06:38:01 pm »

Not sure under which board this should be under really...

A former oil rig worker spent 15 years building an exact replica of a North Sea platform - out of more than four million matchsticks.

David Reynolds, 51, spent up to 10 hours each day painstakingly crafting the half a ton model of the Brent Bravo rig in his living room.

Each matchstick was individually polished and then glued in pl ace to create the 21ft long, 12ft high masterpiece.

The rig is so big it had to be built in stages, one piece at a time...

David used his living room and conservatory to build the sections, and the finished work was stored in his sheds and loft.

The completed model comprises 14 sections and is so big it had to be moved by two lorries to the Bursledon Brickworks and Industrial Museum , in Southampton, Hants.

Now retired, David, from Southampton , is hoping to secure a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for his efforts. He said: "The current world record for a model is 3.5 million matches so I'm just waiting for someone to come and adjudicate."

David says his model building started when his 22-year-old son Mark bought him a matchstick train to build. He said: "I built the model train within a few weeks so Mark suggested that I should build a tanker or an oil rig...."

"...I decided to try and build a small oil rig similar to the one that I worked on for five years. Then I started on the large rig and got a bit carried away. Once I started I just had to finish it."

David used his experience of wo rking on the rig and as a maintenance technician at Esso at Fawley Power Station, Hants, to build the model.

David used every spare minute and burned the midnight oil as he fashioned the replica, which he has dubbed the Cathedrals of the Sea. Everything is built to the finest detail, including the accommodation block for the rig workers, the flotilla of ships moored to the rig, the platforms and towers.

He added: "Earlier this year I thought about destroying it because I wanted the space in my sheds. My wife Julie said it would be criminal not to put it on display after all the years of hard work I had put in. Fortunately, the brickworks museum said they would display it for me."

David says he gathered some used matches from friends but his main source was from a wholesaler, dramatically trimming the cost. David said: "If I had bought all those matches from the cornershop it would have cost me about £46,000. It actually cost me £1,600."

David's wife Julie, 49, has been living with the model for the last 15 years - and she said she was delighted to see the back of it. She said: "We never dreamed that it would get so big when he started building the model - if I had known I would probably have said no to the idea. Over time it just became part of our lives. We just accepted it...."

"...but it was still a relief when it was finally taken away. I had forgotten what our house actually looked like. I said to David that once it leaves it is never coming back."

Why do you consider this to be a waste of time? Don't you think that this guy might consider "boat building" a waste of time and, my, wouldn't you be upset then?
Some "boat builders, whether of model or real boats, have spent many years building their dreams/models/works.
At least this person's work shows a lot of realistic detail and commitment, patience, etc.
(Unlike a few on here).
Can you show such commitment? I wonder!
I for one applaud him and other such like minded "talented" builders/ modellers.

Waiting for the sarcastic reply.

Ron

Edit;

As a footnote,

How many of us on here have tried modelling in matchsticks?
Try it, it's not that easy.

Well said, Ron...........that is just unbelievable, and yes, I've tried matchstick modelling....very difficult. It has to be applauded and commended for the effort alone.
this world would be a very boring place if we all followed one route through life alone, and didn't appreciate everyones efforts for what skills they show.
Personally I don't like yacht's, springers and fast electrics/ice..........but I would never condem someone else for participating in those types of models or modelling just because my interests lie elsewhere.....very infantile to do so in my mind!.

Each to their own, and live and let live..A sad world when we cndem someone else's model just because it doesn't fit into our own  narrow little tunnel of life.

"Well Oil be blowed" What a fantastic achievement - the builder can be justifiably proud of his efforts  :-)) - and full marks to his other half for supporting him in his quest. Well done !

Hope they don't decide to go on "strike" though.... {-)

Anyone else tried this arm of modelling ? You'd be hard pressed to "match" that one.

All puns intended

Regards,

Ray.

Its only my oppinion and im not denying that its not a great achievment. Im not being judgmental of the model or what he wants to build thats entirely up to him!

But 10 hours a day for 15 years!!! I got to admit i have no pantience when it comes to building my models. Im usually finished in a couple of weeks, but that does not mean im totally impatient as i taught myself to play guitar and thats taken me 6 years and you never stop learning. But the hours hes dedicated in my oppinion could have been used to do many achievments of various types.

IF it was me and i was on a death bed at 85 i would be really hacked off i spent 1/5th of my life building a model.

I take the comment back, just shows my ignorance, its his life his achievment and if hes happy with it then who am i to judge. I apologise to him and to anyone else who else thinks im wrong.  :((

In New England recently we visited the Shelburne Museum near Burlington on Lake Champlain, Vermont. One of the exhibits was a model of a circus procession of the early years of the 20th Century. The model took 25 yearw to build and is no less than 525 feet long, housed in a special building. Absolutelly incredible.

I like the use of 150 thousand match sticks in the build of the Titanic. It does have the advantage of a short   "shopping list" when looking for parts !!

     http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aMT3KKYIEM

Quite a pleasant  'waste of time'  :}   I often use them myself but nothing quite that big.
