Well joy turned to tears tonight, first i positioned the crane and base to see what it looked like and was pleased with the result, however when i went to do some painting on the front of the wheelhouse I noticed the paintwork had started to craze, only reason I can think is that it was sprayed in the workshop when we had a cold spell?  Anyhow it meant removing some bits and respraying after much masking, problem I have now is the new orange is slightly lighter, same paint manafacturer, same colour?  Hooefully it will dry darker and look ok when the lacquer as been applied..

After rubbing back and respraying the front of the wheelhouse I have finshed off painting the Y-Boat and applied some of the decals supplied, waiting for some numbers to be made up before I can finish, next job is to do the supports on the bridge floor for it to sit on...

Cheers Mike, couldn't of done it without ya mate!
Spent all morning painting and just trying to finish off the detail now, would this one be ok for the back of the 52-01?

Only a little progress today, added some detailing to the Hiab and started to make the forward hand rails...

Hi Russ..

I notice that you use brass rather than whitemetal which I assume is tublar to keep things light. Does it add much to the overall weight.  I'm observing with interest all the different builds of RNLI lifeboats as I hope to build a Mersey Class Lifeboat based on my local station of which (hopefully) I'll be enrolled back as a crew member this week.

Hi Declan,( sorry i missed your post altogether)

I am using brass rod as opposed to tube for the mast and railings, up to now there doesnt seem to be a weight issue.

Thanks

Looking good Russ ! What props and propshafts did you use. On my Tyne and others, I used Raboesh (sorry if spelling is wrong) A lot of people have told me they are some of the best available, unless you make your own of course.Another Query, please what grease do you use for the propshafts,I can never remember if its supposed to be high melt or low melt !!!??? I normally use Kynol a white/cream coloured grease, but wonder what others use?
Any chance of some piccys of  the propulsion end of the boat please ?
 cheers,
  mick

Hi Mick

The propshafts are Raboesch with oilers, I just use normal grease, never had a problem with using it yet....

Cheers

Hi Russ, your build is looking brilliant & really progressing along fast. Is your crane scratch built & will it work or is it static, also what motors are you using, ?. Sorry for all the questions, but I have decided that I will also build a Speedline Tamar model as soon as funds permit, (spent all my spare cash on holiday). I talked to Adrian yesterday & he was both helpfull & very nice to me on the phone. He is very busy & he tells me he is a one man operation & business is exceeding all expectations & he was sorry he had not got back to me or answered my email, he felt bad about it. So I take back the negative remark I made about him, it must be very hard when you have a full time important job as well. I gather he is an engineer for Rolls/Royce. Mick B.

Hi Mick

The crane is made from the supplied brass etch, it has been mounted so it will turn off a servo later in the build.  Motors will be brushless as in the Tamar...

Thanks

I will be making my own kickboards, I decided to have a go at the problem pieces first that are curved  and cut a template of the curve onto a sheet of 1/16 aluminium and this was then welded onto the base section, these seemed to of turned out ok, the remaining peices just have very slight curves in them which i will be able to bend to shape out of T-Section aluminium.

After a little manipulation all the kickboards have been made, the Aluminium T-section only cost £12.00 so very pleased with the result...

Looking very good Russ, kickboards look great. Shame Speedline kept letting you down with parts, I'll be glad when I get another laptop. Dave.  :-))

Cracking build Russ, really enjoyed it - lovely model. The paint finish looks the bees, is it straight gloss? varnish/polished?

Normal spray cans with half a dozen coats of lacquer then resin waxed to finish...

Cheers Russ, don't know why but once achieving a reasonable finish with topcoats, I'm always so wary of using lacquer or varnish to finish off - just the thought of spoiling the finish I think and to risk it half a dozen times think I'd be tempting fate. Any tips? also what lacquer and resin wax do you use?
                                              Regards, Tony.

Russ,
Just so you know, I'm as worried as Tony as to the final finish, so am hanging on you every word! Please spell it out in words of one syllable.
I've got a good finish in paint (Halfords rattle cans) but haven't put transfers on yet. I've bought the lacquer you recommend but am very nervous as I've not used lacquer before.

Hi Chris/Tony

It's really up to personal choice, I like using lacquer as it protects the paint to a degree and gets a good sheen, the only tip I can give is not to hold the can to close to the job, instead of spraying direct I tend to let it "fall" onto the area as a mist, make sure completely dry with a heat gun and keep layering until the gloss build up, I usually end up with applying about 6 coats...

Cheers
