Could I get an opinion on Mobile Marine Models
« on: December 09, 2011, 01:40:13 pm »

I'm toying (no pun intended) with the idea of buy a tug from Mobile Marine Models and I'm looking for an objective opinion on the quality of their kits.  I've heard good things about the service they give but I haven't met anyone who has built one of their boats.  I'd be interested to hear from anyone with an opinion.  If you don't want to air your veiws in public I'd be happy to receive a PM from you.  :-))

Many Thanks, TailUK

I have built their Lady Wooes tug and have a blog on here. The Hull is exceptionally good. I'm very impressed with it.

I didn't go the fittings kit which was separate, so it's all down to what you can afford. Instructions wise, it's aimed at a proficient builder, so instructions are basic. Should be no problems as the folks on here are only too wiling to help.

Hope this helps your decision making.

Very good value for money, though by no means a beginners model, and MMM are very friendly folk to deal with.

I bought the 'Lady Wooes' hull, plus plan, twin screw running gear, template and timber packs though fittings were acquired from other sources. The template pack was worth its weight in gold and saved many hours hard slog fabricating components 'off the plan', though subject to the proviso that the actual sizes of all components were first compared with their respective template patterns prior to committing blade to material.

With hindsight I should have omitted the Timber pack in view of the fact that I used HIP (High Impact Polystyrene) plastic sheet wherever possible - it's waterproof and doesn't need to be primed/sealed.

My 'Lady Wooes', and accompanying photos, featured in an article published in 'Model Boats' July 2004 and may be of use to prospective builders (if a copy can be found).

So go for it - you won't be disappointed. :-))

I was thinking about the TID.  The intention was the build it as one of the tugs used by the U.S. Army's 338th Harbor Craft Company at St. Vaast la Hogue on the Normandy coast
