Hornby 3.5 inch gauge Stevensons Rocket
« on: March 26, 2007, 09:13:05 pm »

Hi.. Has anyone out there in the model boating world got one of these. Its a 3.5 inch guage live steam model (engine & tender) sold by Hornby in the early eighties.

There are a few of these around and they are butane powered and now getting a bit long in the tooth so to speak.. Does anyone know which items (concerning the supply tubing from the butane tank) wear out?. O.K. so you can't sail it on the water but somebody must have some experience of these surely....
Regards

Have you tried ringing Hornby, back during the early eights they made a Hymek which had a distinct lean. When I picked one up cheep at a model show I rang them and they were very helpful and told me how to fix the lean with a scalpel.

we got one! ;) The seals break down on the pistons, but, with a few mods will be ok, the rest of it is fine and we got a shed load of track too.
 Just incase?

I found one on Ebay and it had two sets of points and an extra box of track, it was too good to miss and I got it as a Christmas present.  We set up the most enormous figure of 8 track in the back room and it went clacking (thats the noise mine makes!) its way round.  I recently got given another set and extra box worth of track with points, so I have 4 of them now by a friend who detonated his, (by leaving the gas on before trying to relight it....big fireball ensued!) so I really have enough to have a railway round the garden.  Its just not a very suitable garden!  I'd like to lay it at dads works garden though.  Does anyone have one of the carriages?  I saw one with a mod that involved a throttle on the steam line unions, such a shame hornby didnt make this standard.
