Colouring an epoxy glue?
« on: January 09, 2012, 08:45:06 am »

I'm putting together a Graupner Micro Magic Carbon version. For those that have already built one, they'll know that the join between the hull and the deck at the stern of the boat doesn't have a nice overlap to stick together.
Graupner's advice is to run a stream on Cyno along the join hoping that capillary action will do the job, and to treble check that water doesn't get in here. (A bad design in my opinion)
Anyway, the boat halves have been duly glued and stuck well, and examining the rearmost join I have found that capillary action did not work and now I have a gap in a couple of places that super glue will never fill, epoxy will but it's the wrong colour, I need something black to do a proper job, I don't want to paint it, I would rather the filling itself were black so........is it possible to colour in any way, epoxy resin? Or maybe there is another method I haven't thought of?
Cheers ears....

I did think of something like that Rich but.....the 2 gaps will require less than a quarter of a teaspoon of glue to fill, so buying a a tube of silicone will be a waste as I'll never use it again  {:-{

Oh, just saw the other post, so enamel paint will mix with Araldite then? If so that is the answer!

Fairy snuff mate, just looked in my cupboard, I thought I had some but I'm blowed if I can find it. If all else fails, how about using clear silicone and then running a black marker pen over it?

Milliput have a black version. Black powder would be best to colour your normal epoxy.

i use common old humbrol paint. you need a fair amount of paint and not too much glue  to keep the colour 'depth' so it may not be too good for strength in your case but if its mainly for gap filling i cant see any reason it wont work.  try it and judge for yourself. a wee tip though is to let the glue go off a bit before applying because when the paint is mixed with it, it makes for a fairly runny mix.  salmon rivers here are  shallow, swift flowing so lures are always bouncing around rocks but they usually last the season when resurfaced.

Hi Nige,

As the MM is ABS, some (black) scrap solved in MEK (or Acetone) will give you a goo, that will fill those gaps very good, you can determen how runny the goo will be by the amount of MEK added.

As it's a (potent) solvent, fill the gaps with small layers and let the solvent evaporate before adding the next layer.
Don't allow 'pools' to form, it'll deform an ABS hull (don't ask how I know that...).

Regards, Jan.
