New to boating. How to increase power.

We have this boat. It is not as fast as we would like. We don't know how to upgrade it as we love the shell itself. It takes 1800mah 7.2 volt nimh battery's. If we stick 5000mah battery's in what size motors would we need to buy so the don't burn out fast? Cheers guys

Higher capacity batteries will give you more running time, but will reduce speed as they will weigh more (unless you go for lipo)

Upgrading the motors is only part of the equation. You need to find out if the speed controller can handle the extra power the motors will draw. Also will the hardware e.g. shafts, couplings etc. be compatible with the new motors or strong enough to handle the improved performance?

It's not unthinkable to end up in a situation where you need to replace all the on board electronics and most of the hardware to achieve your aim. In that instance, sometimes it's a better bet to start over with a new boat where you can specify everything from the ground up.

Thanks for replying. Is there any easy way to increase speed then? Say maybe waxing the underside of the hull? cheers

Very doubtful waxing the boat will make any noticeable difference.

No easy solutions to gaining more speed I'm afraid.

Easy really BUT like anything else it will cost Money

Rip out all the electronics and BIN THEM,Go out and buy a Decent 2 channel set,Buy some bigger motors, buy a mixer and 2 speed controllers total outlay somethin in the region of around £150 Been there had the tee shirt etc .....MY OPINION ......NOT WORTH IT

YOUR money would be far better spent on a Proper radio controlled boat and not a toy which basically this is......I KNOW Ive got one BUT i converted it to a brushless single motor with parts that I allready had and didn't cost me anything and boy does it shift.

Save your Money and buy a decent one

Your choice

Please, let's not be unkind here.  At £29.99 including controller, electronics, in fact everything except batteries, is probably good value. An excellent way for someone with limited resources to get into boats you can sail.   However, as said above you get what you pay for and modifications are unlikely to give significantly greater performance than quoted in the spec without spending a lot of money.  If ithis boat has whetted your appetite for something better then your only practical option is to buy or build something higher spec.  Sorry !

Well said Sir!

Dean - as the previous posters have said your best option is probably to enjoy the model you have 'as is' and if/when the bug bites and you decide to invest in something faster you have a chat to one of the fast electric suppliers such as Astec Racing.

Cheers

Dean..its easy to increase the speed, of your boat, make sure, your electronic set ups are running good..because a lighter boat with two this kind of motors never give up..in performance..make sure the direction of rotation of both motors are in respect with prop driection..make sure there is no any jamming in shafts..make sure direction control surfaces are straight in neutral steering position..if it equipped with two control surfaces, any slight change of the angle of a surface, may be in or out, acts as a brake..as the second one holds the boat straight in course..the drag will slow down the boat...rewind the motor spec, to 5 volts, with torque to medium RPM, as the props are designed to bite more..i hope from pictures, it may be a RS 370, or 380 motors..so, usually this type of motors are powerfull..so, try to make some props, aluminum sheets, in various size, before going to rewind..and you can make an ESC, within minutes, for a higher rating..
you can make a simple speed boat with thermocol, with professional finishing, and fix a 1400 RPM/Volt ECM, in it..it will fly..
