fitting a Graupner smoke unit
« on: January 26, 2012, 12:27:13 am »

I have had a Graupner smoke unit I bought some time ago and I have no experience of fitting anything like this and the instructions that come with it are not very clear at least to me!!!, the number of this unit is 2324, it is a small unit intended for small models, I was hoping to fit it into the S.H.G. model of the "Steam Launch Janet" which is of styrene construction, and electric powered I would be grateful if any fellow member could help me out with the fiitting and operation of this unit.

Thanks in advance, John.

Is it the 6v unit? Basically a small tube?

John I fitted two 6v units in mine - if you go to the link reply no 5 the first two photos show the smoke generators in position - as they were to be fitted into a plasticard deck
i built a small section of ply in the middle for them to be seated in. In places I left a gap between the ply and the plasticard and there is a small computor fan underneath to
blow the smoke up the funnel. I think it ended up looking more realistic and there was no chance of the plasticard melting. As the smoker only lasts 15/20 minutes I hid a small
switch under a locker on deck so I could bring it in and switch it off and carry on sailing or top up if required (down the funnel with a long piece of plasticard tubing to squirt the
fluid through

I've litterally just finished fitting 1 of these in my flower class corvette, the hardest part was gluing the funnel back on.

I simply put 2 blobs of hot glue in the funnel, and pressed the smoke unit into them, put in the oil (0.8ml) using the syringe, connect it to a battery and it'll start smoking. I've just got mine connected up to an old receiver battery pack (4 AA's)

Lol took me a while to find the photos he meant aswell, if you click the link in his post and scroll down to the 5th reply (6th post) the 1st 2 pics show the smoke units fitted into the hull, you can just see the tops of them.

What specifically is it you're confused about? It doesn't matter what way round you connect the wires, it works either way. I didn't think to take pics as I went (and I had glue everywhere/all over my hands) I'm a work now, but I'll try and take some pics when I get home in the morning. Send me a pm if you want.

Sorry for the delay, had to clean the whole bl00dy house today! Anyway, here's a quick video of the smoker working, and then (hopefully) a few pics....

Firstly, this pic shows the smoker unit fitted inside the funnel, you can hopefully see the brass ring round the top of it, with the pin in the middle....

These are the 2 wires from the unit (doesn't matter which way you connect them to a battery), the hole is so big as I was originally planning on fitting the smoker into the hull and have the superstructure fit over, however I decided it'd be better to fit it in the funnel....

Here you see the needle used to fill the unit with the oil, doesn't need putting in a certain place, just anywhere around in the tube surrounding the central 'needle' in the unit, I think the instructions say to put 0.8ml at the most in, and that should last approx. 20 minutes

And this is how much smoke it makes...

I bent a piece of brass wire to produce a circle slightly smaller than the ring on the top of the smoker.  The two ends of the wire were fitted into the sides of the funnel, effectively keeping the smoker away from the sides.  I currently run it on 4.8v but I am reliably informed that 6.0v is so much better.

If you have room in your funnel then you can easily extend the oil capacity of this little unit to give extended smoking times (though not increased smoke amount !)

Simply drill a hole through the outer brass tube, being careful not to hit the centre tube/element, and mount the whole unit in a tube of larger diameter. I used a 35mm film canister and held the smoke unit in place with a bent wire cradle (the Graupner distillate will find its way through most glues). I used a drill of about 3mm if I recall though this is not too critical. Do not overfill the "tank" - enough to fill no more than half of the brass tube. Much more and the unit will struggle to heat up.

Incidentally, mounting the unit lower down in the funnel gives a more dispersed, and I think more natural, effect to the smoke as you do not see the very narrow initial plume immediately above the exit of the centre tube.
