Deck planking size help Please...
« on: January 26, 2012, 03:36:51 pm »

Hi... I'm working on a scratch build of a Chesapeake Buyboat which is basically a 57' fishing boat... I am building it at 1/20th scale... Of all the pictures I have obtained, none have a view of the deck.... These boats varied greatly with no definate or consistent way of building them...so I am thinking of having the deck as wood and not painted. Mainly because the rest of the boat is painted white so I thought it would be a good contrasting finish. Could anyone make an educated guess at what width and length the planks would be at 1/20th scale?  Also any other tips on doing exposed wood decks would be good... eg a good choice of wood etc...... So...the forums expertise would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers Lee

Lee, Try plank lengths of 15' or 20'. width around 5" or 6".
I use Obeche. For a working deck, give the wood a light sparayof matte black and rub down until you get a shade of grey that you like. After laying, caulking etc use as many coats of sprayed matte lacquer as you feel appropriate. Obeche absorbs this like a sponge, so be prepared to use up to a dozen coats. BY.

Teak was about the most common timber for decks, though in more recent times african Iroko is substituted.  For a small boat I would have thought that 6" (7.5mm in 1:20)  wide was about as big as you would need and up to 10 or 15ft  long. 150 to 225mm in 1:20)  Obechi, Bass or Lime wood for the model.  Remember that deck teak that has been scrubbed and holy-stoned  is pale with a slightly greenish tinge, not rich chocolate brown like hardwood furniture.
