Anyone know a source for a cheap prop seal?
« on: February 10, 2012, 11:20:40 am »

A little while ago I got some small submarine prop-shaft seals - from Pandanmodels, I think, who have closed down? These were little brass cylinders with a small cup seal inside, which could be soldered to the prop-tube.

I now need some similar seals, but can't find them in the UK anywhere. I can see sealed prop-tubes for £10 or more, but I need them to be cheap. There are cup seals going from European sites for a few Euros - does anyone know of a similarly-priced source in the UK?

What shaft size.

These guys do a 4mm seal http://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/p24002/4x12x6mm+Nitrile+Rubber+Rotary+Shaft+Oil+Seal+R21+/+SC/product_info.html

The seals that were sold by Pandan, were Subtech. Dave Keogh moved his business out to the far east, but it looks like he doesn't supply the shaft seal anymore.

Thanks, Subculture, you're right - they were the Subtech ones.

I'm looking at eezebilts, so it would ideally be 2mm (or less!) but it's also got to be very cheap - so your first reference is much more attractive than shipping in from the States. I see they go down to 3.5mm - with attractive shipping rates - so I'll pick up a variety and experiment....

The smallest size I've seen for a sprung shaft seal is 3mm. If you go lower than that, you tend to be in o-ring territory, or the other technique is to use some silicone tubing.

... the other technique is to use some silicone tubing.

I'd thought of that, but suspected that the drag might be excessive for eezebilt motor sizes. Also, this is for an internal seal and the silicone idea is better as an external seal. Could be worth trying, though - thanks...
