Info requested on older motor/gearbox combo and speed control ?
« on: February 19, 2012, 08:02:16 pm »

I purchased this motor/gearbox from a friend 20 + years ago and the speed control around the same time. The plan was ( and still is ..[/img] ) to build a work boat type RC model. Since I don't speak German, I wonder if anyone could help me dope out the instruction page that came with the motor.
The motor doesn't look like it would draw many amps ?, but would it move a 5-10 lb. boat with the gearboxes supplied ? My plan is for a 3' - 4' model along the lines of a coastal steamer ? I believe it's an rc car SC and with reverse. From the size of the leads the capacity may be too big ?

Any help or info would be appreciated.

The motor is a Marx Monoperm or Deccaperm Pile depending on its physical size.
The gearbox is on the end and is made up of several gearboxes each one giving a reduction.
These motors are no longer produced.

For the ESC details, google says look here
http://www.teamtekin.com/manuals/rebel2.pdf
At moderate current, it should have no problem handling up to 12 volts.  The nice thing about PWM ESCs is that they dont need to be matched to their motor like the old resistance types - what will control a BIG motor will just as effectively power a small one.  Being intended for car use, the instructions talk about the number of cells and motor winds.  Boaties tend to understand "volts" and "amps" in ratings since many of us have to figure these things out rather than just plug them together.  For measuring the electric bits we prefer a meter rather than a ruler.
Will the motor move a 10lb model coaster with the gearbox?  Yes, but it will be an incredibly slow mover.  Geared like that, you should be able to winch it up a bank.  Probably better with the gearbox removed and just use direct drive.  A common rule of thumb for direct drive is that the prop should not be more than the motor diameter.

Thank you for the info.  I plan to try and check the final rpm's as rigged with the four gear reductions and then see what comes with them removed.  I clipped a 2 cell lipo battery, 7.4 v, to the motor terminals and the rpm was very low with the four reductions.  Under 100rpm I would guess.   I can borrow a optical tach tomorrow.   I assume I can use 1,2,3 or 4 of the gear boxes as needed ?   A friend mentioned that a 50 - 60 mm prop at 5000-8000 rpm would give a realistic speed to a 3' model ??

Don't know if anyone is still interested, but I finally got to take some rpm measurements for the various gear box ratios.  With the 6 x 1 'pile' and a 2 cell lipo reading 8.17 v. :  1660 rpm and .48 amps draw.  With the 3 x 1 'pile' and the 6 x 1 ganged together and the same battery ( now 8.14 v.),  570 rpm and 2.8 amp draw.  By my math, the motor is turning about 10,000 +/-.  Probably more than anyone really wanted to know .....

A final thought, the hex spline that engages with each 'pile' seems very small and I wonder what would happen if stalled by weeds etc ?

Thanks again to all,  Charlie
