Regner 20240 Steam Driven Water Make Up Pump
« on: March 09, 2012, 10:42:35 am »

Hi .......... [possibly a question for kno3]

Does anyone have any knowledge in the Regner 20240 steam driven water make up pump?

The Regner WEB catalogue is in .pdf format so I cannot translate it....

But from what I see....the steam side is 10 mm stroke x 10 mm diameter bore & driving a 6 mm diameter single acting water pump..which would also be 10 mm stroke  ....the water volumetric displacement is 0.331cubic cm/stroke

It is certainly a most attractive unit....abeit the 480 Euro

I see no reason why the steam inlet volume could not be metered to as to provide a measured displacement back to the boiler.....

Any thoughts appreciated.......Derek

I have a 3" one that works well BUT from a different supplier and just castings, I have found Regner steam parts very expensive for what they are.
there is a very very nice one for sale now on ebay  again not the same make but a nice job.

Hear is a picture of my 75mm one catings  from http://www.southworthengines.com/

and the nice one on ebay

Hello! :-)
Since I put my nose in this kind of material , I must say that I am pleased with this  item.
I have mine working well , and the reason why, is because I start it by hand, then I need to let it run ,against boiler pressure. It needs to keep hot or the steam condensates and it stops easily.
i like the drain cocks on yours hS93 , because it avoids the use  pliers to displace the piston and take the condensation away.
I show you below, the trials of mine:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9pwVKTBEUM&feature=player_embedded

To measure the flow towards the boiler, i use a By pass on the outlet of the Donkey. It keeps it warmed up, allow a continuous stream and water flow at boiler pressure.
The problem of the steam is that it cools down non stop! %)
Note: I must admit that I cannot afford a Regner one, but Stuart's one is to greedy with steam.
Any suggestion and experience is aprre ok2ciated.
Cheers!

Hi first of mine has not got any drain cocks , they are on the slightly bigger one for sale on ebay, but mine seams to start with no problems, has yours always leaked so much steam mine has very little leaking and the idea of having to start with pliers makes me think there is a timing problem, that is a very nice looking  boiler by the way.

Hello!
You are right, I have to do something on all these leaks. %)It will probably give more efficiency.
Just one question: I use the pliers to help the condensate to go away.
Is your Donkey starting without this help? When you open steam on it, does it start right away?
Do you have something on the timing? ie: at what position does the main piston (with forks) moves the distributor?
I know , that it is not easy to explaiin like this.
Thanks anyway! ok2
Cheers! :-)

I think the steam leaks are not helping ill see  if I can get my plans back and I can get a copy of the instructions for setting up the timing . a friend  built mine for me .
t does self start after it has run once as long as it has not cooled that much plus I am drying the steam as well .

nice pump, I think Kbio has a leak problem that is stopping his working, mine works like yours Bernard, I see the timing is fixed on the Regner pump so that wont be the problem them ill see if I can find a video of mine running.

I know this is a bit of the original topic but it may help Derek decide which way he goes the Regner pump is a nice small package. so are the servo ones

Are these smaller or bigger than the Regner version and how much do they cost?

Good evening!
I cannot find any on your link! {:-{
I see that they supply a lot of stuff, but can't get this "Donkey"!

By the way, does anyone knows why we call it "donkey" in English & "Littele horse" in French. I do not know in the other languages.
Thanks for the help HS93.
Regards! ok2

they haven't got any at the moment so they are showing just a small picture if the link does not work go to fittings and look at steam water pumps. I think Donkey may be as they a animal that just plods along doing a job plus I think the full size engine sounds like donk donk donk as it runs, they normally just run very slow making up the water on full sized plants from what I can gather

Thanks a lot HS93!
I shall ask.
About the donkey and  the story I've been told, is :
In the old days, on sails boats, the steam pump was used for offloadind water from the inside , and the only noice they could hear was  the piston stem rubbing inside the non lubricated packing!
It sounded like a donkey or horse! :o
But,  as all old stories, there must be part of thruth and part of imagination.
Kind regards! :-)
