Has anybody converted the 1/400th scale Revell Queen Mary 2 to r/c? At 865mm in length it should be feasible, shouldn't it? I guess there could stability problems, but they can be overcome I think?

I have one of these with just the hull sides glued together as I've not yet made up my mind how to power it. Must get around to it as I travelled on the ship last year and now have a lot of on board photos.

I'm still wondering about propulsion, I would like to replicate the pod system and I did find some plastic right angle drives on a toy speedboat wind up outboard but theye were too fragile to use with QM2. I think it might be possible to find micro motors that could be used but how would you keep moisture out of them? The back end could be sealed in resin but the shaft at the front would be difficult to seal.

One technique tried has been to run shafts through the hull to locate the prop immdeiately in front of the inner pods so that all that is on view is a short length of shafting. The other two pods can then be converted to twin rudders.

I think I'd maybe just use two conventional shafts, Colin...those pods look a bit technical to replicate, so two bog standard shafts, 25/30mm props and a couple of 385 motors will suffice for me I think. Simplicity rules for me...as long as the boat goes forwards and backwards I'll be happy.

You won't need 385s Rich. 280s should be fine and 18mm props too. You don't need it to plane!

Hi Rich SHG do all the small motors, M2 prop shafts and M2 props.

Very helpful people, supplied all my stuff for my 1:200 Arizona build.

Colin, that was my fault, I shouldn't have typed 385's at all...put that down to me forcing myself to imbibe in a second glass of Bushmills.   
My Revell Titanic had two 280's independently controlled and that worked fine, overpowered if anything.


Dicky...thanks for the link, young sir...that's saved me a lot of googling. I've actually managed to download a copy of the SHG catalouge.


And Mr MoreCoffee...wow, that is some build that guy's doing, far beyond me. Thank for that link, now bookmarked.

I did something similar. I bought a couple of hi torque servos from fleebay, separated the motors from the speed controllers and used a y lead to the receiver. Plenty of power, and only 15 quid for 2 motors and speed controllers. It worked a treat.

Building has been slowed by:

A (number one daughter wielding brushes and paint, she calls it 'decorating....')
B (the fact that I've just been shopping, walked past the diy store, and totally forgot about nipping in and buying a couple of cans of aerosol paint)
C (the thought that I'd be in trouble with aforementioned daughter and my doctor for spraying the hull indoors)
