Forum displaying my email address - how to stop it?
« on: March 20, 2012, 10:56:46 am »

I have set my profile to hide my email address but if you press the envelope icon under my user name at the left of my posts it takes you to Windows Mail which shows my email address.

I do not want my email address available for spam hunters but how do I stop it being shown. I am quite happy NOT to receive emails but only private messages.

I notice that other members do not have the envelope icon but how do I get rid of it?

I am not sure what you mean.

If you click on the envelope icon under my user name it takes you to a Windows Mail template which clearly shows my email address.

Just to make sure that it isn't recongising me as the account holder & not showing my email address to anybody else I have also tried Circlip, U-33 and Martin. All clearly let me see their e mail addresses by pressing the envelope icon.

Dicky D - you do not have the envelope icon & I cannot see your email address

Thank you Martin.

Does that mean that Circlip and U-33, whom I tested above, have not ticked the "hide email" box in their profile?

If so I am guessing that quite a number of the re-registrants might also have forgotten as the box is not ticked by default.

probably they don't (as I don't) mind displaying their email addresses......spam hunters will have already bought or conived your email address long ago should they have wanted it.

Left mine as contactable Chris as it saves time when trying to help via "attachements" on E-mail. You have to be signed in to see them anyway.

Ok if it is your choice. I have had to change email address a number of times over the years because the volume of spam became ridiculous & it is a real pain. It is headed that way again at the moment.

Thanks for all the comments.

My email address has been visible since I joined Mayhem, and I have never had any spam traceable to the forum - I use a specific address so I can trace it. My address is also on the MPBA website and that still doesn't generate spam. I suspect that if your email address is in the Mayhem database then the spam harvesters can still find it.

Ok if it is your choice. I have had to change email address a number of times over the years because the volume of spam became ridiculous & it is a real pain. It is headed that way again at the moment.

I use multiple addresses for different purposes. My work addresses carry work data. My personal addresses are used by friends and family. I have 'commercial' addresses which I use for buying things, paying the gas bill, etc, and I have specialist hotmail addresses for things like my EeZeBilt and Taycol sites. I also run 'throwaway' addresses for rather more dodgy applications where I would expect them to be spammed. It makes life easy because I can concentrate on one set of work at a time....

Your ISP will almost certainly provide you with several addresses if you want to set them up. If nothing else, I would recommend keeping your personal life and work life separate from your commercial transactions. Commercial transactions are usually the ones which end up being spammed...

If you need a simple throwaway address - use The Mailinator. http://mailinator.com/ This provides a throwaway email address valid for a day. To use it, just make up a name, for example 'fred'. Then send an email to [email protected]. That email address will automatically be created and run for several hours, and if you go to Mailinator you can read and reply to the mail. It will then all be deleted automatically....

Thanks for that. I agree about keeping personal & business seperate but that means I know where my email address has come from & I do get spams on my personal site. As you all know the problem is that once your email address is out there the spam houses can send out vast numbers of emails.

I suspect that it is about to get worse as I got a very strange email from a friend last week with attachments (which I didn't open) & then the day after I got a much more sensible email telling me that they had been hacked/got a virus & that they were going to change email address immediately. Whether the virus just sent a message to everyone on their contacts list, or sent the contacts list to some low life, I don't know.
My email service provider checks the basic emails for viruses etc + antivirus + zone alarm etc. We do try.

Ho hum............................

What Chris75 was complaining about, as I understood it, was the envelope symbol showing. Mine does I believe.

I agree with Nige52 that barriew does not have the envelope symbol but Nige52 does.

I have had the "hide my email address" box ticked since before I started this thread but I can still see my "envelope". Will an ordinary member (not someone with special access) please confirm that I don't have the envelope symbol under my log in name when you are logged in.
