Prop pitch measurement
« on: April 14, 2012, 10:12:09 am »

Hi,
Is there a (simple) way to measure the pitch on a propeller? :}
I think I need to change props on two boats so that they (the two boats) perform better, and therefor know exactly what questions to ask the variouse suppliers of propellers. :-))

One is powered by 2 Johnsen 540's, with 30 mm props.
This one uses heaps of amps, so the run time is'nt as good as it should be, so I'm thinking of going to smaller props so as to unload the motor (amp-wise), and therefor get (hopefully) similar performance, and longer runtime.

The other boat, a Steam Boat (Lady S.) only gets about 10 mins runtime out of a tankfull, <:( and I'm thinking that another prop with more pitch, or maybe a 4 blade(??) so as to make the motor run slower and harder, so as to conserve steam. Unfortunatly, I can't increase the diameter of the prop, (not without a MAJOR rebuild of the entire hull) so a different pitch might be the way to go.

I've been a member on here before, :-)) but after the meltdown recently, I'm now back to starting point. <:(

Any way, anyl input would be most welcome!

Thanks
Mick

Look at the props from the side - the angle between the blade surface and a normal to the prop shaft, taken from where the blades meet the hub, is the pitch angle.

blade   normal
     \  |
      \ |
       \|
--------- shaft

You'll need a protractor or a calculator.
