How about if you could type a course (magnetic) into your transmitter and send it to the boat in a steering competition? With, of course an "execute" at the appropriate moment.To make it more fun it would have to be a sailing boat, with the computer calculating how/when to go about to achieve the desired course against the wind.

For those Mayhemers who may not visit the Steam R&D section (Flash steam plant control), there is the AE-35 controller (based on PIC technology) that is used to control the "Vital Byte" steam boat that has a monotube boiler. The controller has 2 thermocouple inputs for measuring boiler temperatures, 3 RPM inputs for measuring the pumps and engine speeds, and 4 PWM outputs for the servo gas valve, pumps' ESCs and a servo dial for indicating pressure. There is also a port for the separate display and command box.

The AE_35 demonstrates the direction this sort of technology can take us.

I would certainly recommend forum members to try out these new "platforms" Raspberry PI or Aduino, since any software based system is so flexible and different ideas can be tried out without lots of re-wiring. The Arduino seems to be biased towards our applications, since it supports servos directly and also inductive loads via a inferface board called a "shield".

This old fart cut his teeth on the Atlas computer when Mr Sinclair was only making his little audio amp kits!

It will take me at least that long to get the SD card loaded.

I have already been into my bits box and sorted out how to use an independent BEC as the power supply.

This PC is going to find so many uses in model control and robotics.

I have no idea at all.
However, as a recently qualified (and still unemployed) primary school teacher I thought I should get to know this technology from the outset.
I'm also a (an ageing) techno-geek who, aged ten, rode the wave of the early Sinclair computers. I cut my teeth on a ZX81. I had to have one of these.

However, once I get a chance to explore the IO possibilities, then I can see applications in models. I'm currently planning to have computer control of my foresails to allow realistic tacking/jibing. I was going to use a picaxe for this but the option to have a full GUI interface when in the workshop is attractive.

I've also had old cars in the past that I've wanted to have PCs on board. I had a SIII Landy with electronic ignition that would have been cool with an onboard PC to monitor the engine.

But mostly it's just because they're there.

Thanks Dave. They're few and far between anywhere but Cumbria's a notoriously stable population. Not many people move around and I can't go where the jobs are. It's a little demoralising when you think just how eager the government were to persuade people in to teaching.

I was getting 504 errors so hopped on over to RCGroups.com and came across a thread "Laptop to RC" (http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1665760) - anyway, long story short etc, they referenced this device for plugging in to Arduino's and Pi's and thought I should mention it here:
