HMS Mohawk c.1910 Work in progress-12pdr guns & bandstand.

Making the guns for Mohawk really has been a labour of love and a massive test of patience. The first problem was finding a good image of the earlier mark of the 12pdr 12cwt naval gun. I spent weeks on the web in my spare time and finally it paid off. Anyone thats interested in modelling the gun in the future can find a superb set of pictures on the "Flickr.com" photo sharing website. Just type "The Guns of Dunree" into the search box and look for the pictures posted by Joefuz. These are the most comprehensive but there are others.

I would recommend to anyone attempting to model the guns (x5) like i have to consider making one in say three parts ie, barrel & recoil cylinder, elevating mechanism & mount, then casting them in white metal. The alternative is about one months worth of modelling evenings and around thirty parts per gun.
Something of note with these weapons was the lack traversing gear. The gun was "shoulder controlled" ie the layer using his right shoulder would swing the gun by applying pressure. The right hand grasped the pistol grip and the left the elevating wheel. The shoulder rest is the shark fin like piece on the model.

There are three bandstands on Mohawk c.1910 with the one in the photo being positioned between the second and third funnel, offset to starboard. I made the central cone structure from medium density model board. Its a great material to work with that can be machined, drilled, carved, sanded etc etc and will take most modelling paints. I simply fixed a rod in the bottom of a piece of model board and turned it using my cordless drill and some sandpaper.

The stanchions are from Dean's and i achieved the differance in height by turning upside down some of the RN style stanchions.

The photo below shows the bandstand in position next to funnel three.
