Bait boat advice needed
« on: May 10, 2012, 06:39:12 pm »

Hello
Ive started building a bait boat my self. Ive bought a hull  ( 60 cm x 30cm   height 15 cm )

Since i dont have a clue  i want your help to gear up.
Ive been looking at these (crawler engine) http://www.rcplanet.com/Integy_V12_Rock_Crawler_Lathe_Motor_55T_Single_p/intscm5501v2.htm (2 engine setup). I cant find specs tho
Steering will be by lowering revs on one engine kinda like a tank :p:p

Transmitter http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__10186__HK_7X_2_4Ghz_7ch_w_5_Model_Memory_TX_RX_V2_Mode_2_.html
Thats all i have thought :D:D. So i need a mixer esc ( i think?)/bec/transmitter/receiver/motor/props  %% %%
Any help is appreciated
Budget wise i dont want to spend more than 250-300 usd

that transmitter you selected is out of stock, this one will do it:

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__8337__Hobby_King_2_4Ghz_4Ch_Tx_Rx_V2_Mode_1_.html

you only need 2 motors and 2 speed controllers. you dont need a mixer because you can use the 2 sticks on the transmitter and push them both forward for forwards and release one to turn either left of right. move one sideways to dump bait.

what batteries do you want to use?

First of all sorry about the quadruple posting it was laging when i posted this topic. If you notice the timestamp is identical. I tried to report my self to a mod but apparently i cant  >>:-( >>:-( nor can i delete them

Im fron Greece if that makes any diff.
I was thinking about the transmitter since they are kinda cheap id buy something to use later on.
What kind of speed controller do i need? I see that they are rated up to 200 A, but cant find any specs on the motor.
As for batteries i was thinking of LiFePo since i read they are safer or sealed lead acid

the transmitter i selected for you has the receiver with it. If you make the order for all the parts at once they will combine the postage.

Speed controllers have all kinds of ratings and variations, it depends on what props and motors you use. Have you got any pics of underside of your hull?

Right you need a pair of graupener 900 motors available off ACTion and one of his P94 combined mixer and twin speed controllers as for prop size I personally would go 45mm 3 blade brass props, you can get mounts  for the motors off MMB on here or |Steves model boat bits, propshaft lenght depends on how far up the hulls you are placing the motors, either of thise suppliers can provide you with couplings,as for Batts Personally I would buy some NIMH 12v packs off Component shop

Hello sorry for the late reply
I cant seem to find the said motors on Action. P94 goes for 79 pounds i see. If mad mike is right 185 is kinda steep only for motors esc, props, i need the hole package. Also someone suggested 55-60 mm 3 or 4 blade props so the engine doesnt heat up and for extra torgue. Dunno if hes right

I think it is better with the 2 motor setup so i can stay within my budget (250 - 300 usd ). I can protect the props with a weed guard, a stainless steel mesh wrapped around them

I was thinking maybe something like this method of propulsion:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/250811747786?var=550030008817&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2648

dionysg said where he fishes theres strong currents and winds but with ample powerplants i think that maybe the elements can be overcome. like 2 540 motors or something.

Yeah £79 for a proper combo speed controller around £30 for props £30 max for shafts and couplings and £24 for a pair of these

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12-v-ELECTRIC-MOTOR-12v-PRICE-INCLUDES-POSTAGE-/300511267976?pt=UK_BOI_Electrical_Components_Supplies_ET&hash=item45f7de0c88

Making it in your budget, having built many a Bait boat including the one you are getting this is a pROVEN set up which will serve the test of time Beleive you me....you pay the money and make the choice.Oh and those motors will cope with 24v if necc.

If you want reliability and sheer power to overcome the currents etc this is the set up to have.

Since the hull got shipped today, i will have it next week, ive got some time for research. You say youve built the same hull as the one i got is it any good? Can you post some pics of the finished boat if you dont mind? What props/shafts have you used/recommend?
Im trying to build this boat on budget, and i need also transmitter, batteries and im guessing other things that i havent thought yet. All opinions are welcome since this is my first build

Greek LOL nope Welsh thru and thru \Stavros is my Knickname, sorry don't have any photos never took any to be honest with you shafts if memory serves me right were around 8ins long and as previous post said I used 3 blade brass props.
The hull is a very good one to be honest with you well made, building a bait boat to your tight budjet tbh will be difficult, yes you can use cheaper components but there is an old saying over here

BUY CHEAP BUY TWICE........and believe you me it is very true, other will say I am wrong in what I am saying I totally disagree with what their recommendations ref motors for the simple reason is as follows.

Bait boats need much more power than a model boat simply because not only have you the wight of the boat but 1 kg of Bait 4oz of lead and they will have to tow a fishing line behind them. This is the reason for powerfull motors, smaller motors might do but I guarantee you one thing they will run VERY hot and burn out.

I hate to argue with Stavros but you don't really need those big 900 motors in a hull of this size. This will suffice. http://www.action-electronics.co.uk/pdfs/Bait%20Boat%20-%20Jon%20Nutter.pdf
If you only want to use one battery then omit one of those shown and also the P103. Props should be around 40-45mm 3- or 4-blade. Planet 5 is a good budget radio.

Sorry Dave to tell youo but you are SO SO wrong in that.Have you ever tried to take out line accross the Seine in an undepowered bait boat I HAVE beleive you me a bait boat weighs a lot more than a model and towing a line as well.

Make your own minds up

The P94 is a good reliable piece of kit, and, in the unlikely event of it getting broken, is repairable.  That said, with the price of modern radios being as low as it is, the earlier suggestion of using two separate ESCs and steering using the two motor controllers on their own TX sticks has merit, the modern sets seem to start at 4 channels, which leaves a few left over for controlling the bait hopper, weight release etc.
ACTions ESCs will control impeccably and handle the power without any problems (it gets hot in Greece, doesn't it?), many of the high current rated oriental ESCs, looking at their wiring, seen to have an optimist in their advertising department.  Or a downright liar.  Beware of their current carrying claims.

you all got to bare in mind that with his 180 pound budget he needs the radio, motors, props and shafts., batteries, charger for the batteries esc and then the postage to send it to greece %%

Sorry Dave to tell youo but you are SO SO wrong in that.
Dave
This boat has twin hulls which are only about 20" long and 4" wide each. To cram two 900 motors (1.3Kg) and two 12v SLAs (???Kg) in there would possibly overload it - it would certainly hamper its capacity for carrying boillies out to the fish, as well as being an advanced exercise in the art of compact installation.
I don't have a problem with folk who choose other manufacturer's equipment for whatever reason, but I wouldn't like anyone to be bamboozled into buying stuff which he then couldn't use in combination with what is essentially a pretty small model boat.
Similarly anyone is free to take my advice (or ignore it), but we have dozens of customers who have done so and are very satisfied with the consequences. Disagree with me if you like but that doesn't make me "SO SO wrong" or my advice any less valid than yours.
And why on earth do you think I would want to "take a line out across the Seine in an underpowered boat"? Fish are from Morrison's, arent they?  8)
