Very short battery life.
« on: May 23, 2012, 05:07:11 pm »

I gave my new build boat, (Nautical Marine Models "Dark Biter" MTB), it's maiden voyage and was fairly pleased with the results....at least it didn't sink!.

The boat did get up to plane and looked balanced, but I felt it should be a little quicker....Turning radius was quiet large and I may need to look again at the twin rudder linkages to see if I can obtain more rudder movement

Battery life was very short, about 10 minutes max, and I wondered if I could upgrade my current batteries or look at fitting twin packs or something else. Your advice would be appreciated. Would fitting a 12volt Lead acid be any better or possibly these LIPo things (which completley mystify me!), in which case, which one?.

The boat has twin Graphner equivilent 600 motors, (Westborne models sourced these)
Battery - Nimh Battery Pack SubC 3800mah 9.6v Premium Sport (Tornado)
Single ESC with BEC, Not sure of the size but Westborne assurred me it was more than capable of running the motors and BEC.
Twin Props, 3 blade 30mm dia.
Hi Tech Servo
Planet 2.4 TX and RX.

Regards

10 minutes using 2 600s off a 3800mAH battery with plenty of flat out is probably not bad.  Different props might improve things, but they sound like they are the right size to let the motors spin up to optimum speed.  Maybe fewer blades?  Less acceleration but more top speed.
Steering might be improved with 1 ESC per motor and a mixer.
One battery pack per ESC of the same size will improve run time, the extra weight will reduce performance.  Avoid lead acid, great in displacement boats, less so if trying to keep the weight down.  If lithium batteries are a mystery, best avoid them, as well, at least for the time being.

Hi Alan,

As Malcolm pointed out, ten minutes of full throttle runtime isn't bad at all, considering the size and motorchoice...
To get more speed you'll need twobladed props in the Ø36 mm region, experiment with props of different pitch to see which one gives you the best balance between topspeed and runtime.

More runtime requires a bigger 'tank', aka higher capacity batteries.
Eventually you'll have to deal with the mystery of Lipo's (or LiFePo's) to achieve more runtime and speed without the hull sinking in too deep, which will cost you performance.

When the Lipo hurdle has been taken, another upgrade could be brushless motors.
I say could be, because brushless in a scale boat has it's restrictions; the setup has to be quite overkill, to handle the crawling at partial throttle, as running a brushless setup at partial throttle generates a lot of heat, both in ESC and motor.
Watercooling for both motor and ESC's (one per motor) is mandatory.

A brushless setup is however more efficient than brushed motors which as a rule of thumb can convert up to 30% of the battery power into heat in stead of runtime, brushless setups can reach 90% efficiency.

Regards, Jan.

5000 mAH packs are available. Westbourne supplied me 3800 mAH saying they were the max available. Found out from here later that was incorrect.

Thanks Chaps for all the info, makes very interesting reading.
I have since ordered another identical battery and a paralell connecter, so I will see what effect that has.....

The 5000 option sounds good, I might have to try that later...

A very impressive layout with the brushless things, but I've spent enough on motive power so I'll see if I can optimise what I've got....but boat looks great...
