RTTL ROUNDELS
« on: June 23, 2012, 02:35:46 pm »

Hi to all.
I would like a little help please,  I am restoring a RTTL and the roundel on the superstructure is causing me a few problems.
Is there a yellow circle on this boat? also should I paint this on?  or should I put a decal on it,  the only thing with this is there are 10 strips that after be glued on top of superstructure.
Can someone help please.?

Hi Olly, I have a Vosper RTTL too which I am currently building. what size is the one you are building? As you can see below there is a picture of the RTTL which is on public dispaly at the RAF Museum in Hendon, you will also notice that this one does not have the yellow circle on it. I must admit I am not sure which ones should and which ones shouldn't have the yellow circle.
As for the roundel itself you can buy all the relevant decals for this boat on ebay...I bought some and they are very good  :-))

Have you any photos of your model?

Hi Olly

I think I mentioned to someone else on the forum about this subject, just can't remember which topic it was in.
To clarify the yellow ring around the roundel and its correct use;

The yellow ring indicates an Air Sea Rescue Launch used by the RAF Air/Sea Rescue Service from 1941 to the mid 1950s.

Which version of the Vosper 68ft RTTL are you building? The two engine version as seen at Hendon or the original three engined version that was armed with 20mm Oerlikons? The reason being if you build the early version you can use the yellow ring without any problems but if build the later you would have to do some research on when the roundel was updated on your particular model.
Hope this helps.

Regards

Hi

The MKI 68ft RTTLs were the old wartime Hants & Dorset HSLs (3 x Napier sea Lion) stripped of armament and fitted with target towing winches powered by 10hp petrol Fords. The numbers fell between 2552 and 2746 inclusive. The post-war design MKIAs were a beamier design, and to start with were (under-) powered by the 3 Napier Sea Lion set up until the Rolls Royce Griffons came available. The numbers were 2747 to 2750. The subsequent five were designated MKIBs and were also built with 3 Napiers, but had slab sided aluminium superstructures with improved internal layout.  These were numbered 2751 to 2755. All these boats were upgraded to MKII spec when the new engines came available. The MKIIs were built with the RR Griffons and were numbered 2756-2761, and 2767-2771. The experimental MKII was 2762E, later re-numbered 2772E and when re-planked to standard spec she became 2772. She was never 2762 because there was another RAF rescue vessel with that designation. this also may help

To all,
Many thanks for info and advice. the no is 2753
Stated to paint roundels with humbrol paint which is so weak nowadays, this run, so took off strips and refilled and sprayed her today.

If I put a decal or sticker on then what do I do with the strips on top of superstrucure?
