Maple Decking on my RTTL
« on: July 03, 2012, 09:52:55 pm »

Hi to all.
Just about to deck my RTTL with maple strips, I will use a marker pen for chaulking and maybe tea to stain it but how do you seal maple planking?

Hi Olly
Don't know about Maple but I used thinned down matt varnish on my 1/12 scale Seaplane Tender.

Hi Olly.

I used Burmese teak (so-called 'plantation teak') for my RTTL.  (6 x 1.5mm) planks laid down using gap-filling Cyno and sealed using four (or was it 5?) coats thinned down eggshell-finish clear polyurethane varnish. I have never used Maple (can't get this where I live ;-) ) but I'm sure it won't be too different from Burmese teak or the Indian teak I used on my many 'dhow' models.

It might be of interest to some here on MBM how I get my 'planks' since we cannot simply pop around to the local hobby shop and buy the stuff.  Having cut down large planks of whatever wood I intend using into smaller sizes like 8 x 25mm, I then further reduce these to rough 8 x 2 or 3mm planks using my small table saw.  To finish the planks to constant size and thickness I then use the Dremel router table unit fitted with a drum sander, passing each plank through both sides.  It's a case of making big pieces of wood into small pieces which I then reassemble into big pieces again. What I still need to perfect is a good use for small mountains of saw- and sanding dust!!!

Regards,
Robin
