Tamiya Trucks and Trailers
« on: July 28, 2012, 11:04:54 am »

My other hobby is making these expensive toys.

The Tamiya truck is a kit supplied to enable you to completely build a Truck without buying any thing else to finish it.  (unlike model boats !!)

This is my third truck in the series and I find them quite enjoyable to construct. The Trailers are priced a bit over the top so I have scratch built a Box trailer which fits over the chassis of their flat bed trailer.  That way, I have two for the price of one.  Here's a few pictures to give you the idea.

Here's the trailers.  The large box goes over the flat bed trailer so that it utilises the running section.

Here's the scratch build trailer now with doors fitted. Just a respray required and wire up the 50 lights or so.  :}

What are the sound units like for trucks?
Could they be utilised for boats?

Quite something Martin.  £350 worth of clever digitising.

It is programmed with the complete sound effects of a truck, and there is no way of altering it. The timed sequences are out of this world and it's all automatic. One movement of the joystick starts a chain of reactions. The unit even shakes the cabin to simulatate cab vibrations.

For a demonstration on the Multi processor unit, may I recommend the YouTube films which guys have submitted.  Made me smile, I can tell you.

Hiya Essex,

No, these were the kit ones.  I too have heard about the stiffness of the  'improved '  shocks so didn't go this route. I did, however, lightly lubricate the ones I had, to ensure an easy ride.

The computer system is really out of this world though. It does have up to 20 input sockets for connecting lights and servos here, there, and everywhere.  It's also clever in utilising a four channel transmitter which depends on stick positioning to fire the right sequence of commands.

I am having to re-think linking up the trailer remotely and getting the rear lights to connect by themselves. This is not part of the design so I'm trying to find out how to improve it.   It's nice to do these things as a hobby rather than commercially. Keep the grey cells busy.    :}

I've dug out the pictures of the shocks I've used.

 For Martin.

Here is the computer and it's associated wiring loom. I've fitted it on a board which hinges behind the driver's seat when the cab pulls back down.

I have been busy finishing off my scratch trailer.  Here is the result at the moment. I have built some mudguards and re-sprayed it once again and fitted out the lighting system.

Now I'm into the computer system and it's myriad of sockets, I have been experimenting with extended lighting.

To this end, I have installed 30 orange LED's around the Truck roof.  You will probably have noticed the 50 or so light position holes around the trailer roof.  These have yet to be wired up, so the exciting bit is to come.  %)

The original  Flat bed trailer is just asking for a boat to be transported.

As this is a scale of  1:14,  anyone have any ideas of a boat please.

Thanks for the ideas.    :-))    I guessed there weren't many in the scale, but this type of craft would be the way to go.

No there isn't.... I have already been looking.
In the end I decided on a low loader and a Showmans Engine as a load

Are these the sound units? If they are then the price of £265 is a little less than you have been paying.  :-))

These look like fun but it is an expensive model by my cheapskate standards:

Basic Scania Truck £352
http://www.amazon.co.uk/01-SCANIA-R620-6X4-KIT/dp/B002AT6620/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1344246784&sr=8-1

Tamiya Flatbed Trailer £177
http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Dtoys&field-keywords=tamiya+trailer

Sound Unit £265
Link above

Light Unit £200

+ lots of bits I am sure so £1000 plus radio + dress up bits.

At the Lincoln Steam Fayre each year they have a demo area for these but are clubs common & do they do more than drive around?

I always fancy the fork lift trucks that are always messing around the display which I think might be these at £180.

A Low Loader.  Yes, I have seen these and fancy having a go.  The major problem for us poor people is obtaining the rear wheels complete with Bogies.  To build them by buying each part costs more than a complete trailer.  That's why I've gone the route I did.  I also fancy building a Digger with all electronics but the prices here can exceed three thousand quid, so that's out of the window.

I'm very pleased with Tamiya's engineering and thoroughly enjoyed the construction.  Mind you,  the scratch building part took twice as long and was very challenging to an old plastic boat builder.  :}

No. Theses are just sound units.  What I have is the Multifunction unit which incorporates the controlling of the lights as well.
This device has around twenty separate sockets to plug in side lights, headlights, spot lights, brake lights winkers left and right, reversing light, and a tea making machine.  (I made the last one up, cause it feels that it should for the price !!)   Believe me, as a poor ol pensioner, I have research the prices all over the world and couldn't believe them.

You're right about the Trailer price. These are the cheapest way of getting hold of the rear wheels that I know of.  Did you see the price of the large freezer trailer next to the one on Amazon.  Phew  over £400.

They are very popular these days and clubs are springing up all over the place. I'm actually in three forums which are very interesting.  A bit slow on the letters side but the information that's on them is worthwhile.

Can't disagree with you about the prices though.  A licence to print money.  I'll check back on the diggers and prices as your interested.

Here is the club I am in for all things Tamiya.

http://www.tamiyatruckin.org.uk/forum/default-topic/169-wedico-cat-345d.html

I did enquire about the diggers so here is the letters page. A starting price was Three thousand Six hundred Quid.

Not sure if you have to join to see any pictures, but it is free and well worth the  'Eye candy'

Cheers

A quick look suggests that the £400 trailer is middle of the road.

Curtained side euro container £680!!!!!!
3 axle tipper trailer £729!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Both here:
http://www.tamiyatrucks.co.uk/

It is a pity that they don't offer more for the self builder at reasonable prices so that an aftermarket could develop of body parts. The trucks are very modern & big whilst I would be more ineterested in a 1960's Scammell or the older US trucks. The trucks on display at Lincoln always seem to be demonstartions of masculinity where size matters so much.

Thank you for the forum link.

Word of advice

Quite often the chrome body specials are offered cheaper than the normal ones.... there's a reason for this.... its nigh on impossible to get a good paint finish on the chrome using the reccomended method of a coloured clearcoat.
I ended up priming and spraying mine in normal metallic paint and Im still not happy with it.
Reminds me... must look for a new body parts set
