speed of a reel to reel audio tape..
« on: August 10, 2012, 03:25:48 pm »

All respected Modellers.. today we have ample of options to listen music,in a very high quality and fidelity..fully digital.. but hearing music is not alone gives us a deep impact, and nostalgia..  so, listening from an old record player is nostalgic.. and exciting.. most of the seniors will get the point what i am saying.. its a truth.. if so, i know even more nostalgic device to feel the music.. the old reel to reel spool audio tape.. yes.. nothing can bring the joyness, as the carriers start to turn.. so, i have a plan to restore my Papa's old discarded spool audio system, with new additions.. so, will any seniors guide me about the travel speed of tape, in SP and LP modes..?  its a request.. please..

From what I remember, tape speed was 1.875"/second past the tape head. Hope this helps.

Standard speed was 7.5" per second, Long play was 3.75" per second,
and if you were wealthy and could afford big reels of tape
or you were doing semi-pro recording 15" per second.

Have a look at : http://www.vintagerecorders.co.uk/VR_View_Page.asp?IDS=8

Bill ( excuse me for calling name if you are elder than me..), its nice to hear.. and i have a lots of reworks to do for a good restoration.. original circuit of my old machine is fully transistorised, and most of them are even without numbers.. so, i am adding some useful proven circuit from pre amp to bias oscillator.. and also willing to make a new body with thick foam board.. i saw a big machine in a video, a fully black one, from Pioneer.. is great.. so taking from some view aspects i will complete my machine look alike.. once again.. for the reference about tape speed..

& scoop says.......  :D "AKAI 4000 DB machine. Tape speed is 3 3/4" for low res or 7 1/2" ips" ......... O0 yes also had an Akai M7 which predated the 4000 DB by approx 10 years....the speed ratio was changed by inserting a precision collar over the spindle  %%

Only one big electric motor....wooden brackets....lots of tension springs & levers & belt drive pulleys...no transisters >>:-( ....oh & yes a valve preamp & huge Vu meters.......  :P
