Thing to tie up boats with
« on: August 16, 2012, 02:46:40 pm »

Hello.

Another terminology question: What do you call the thingie on the front of a boat that you tie a rope to when parking it somewhere so that it doesn't drift off? (You would also use it to attach the winch when putting the boat on a trailer.)

And for bonus points, where would one get such a thing in 1/10 scale or thereabouts?

Thanks!

One the deck you might attach your line to a cleat, through a fairlead. or do you mean the D ring under the deck on the keel, where a painter might be attached?

On a yacht you'd call it a cleat, on a ship maybe a bollard. The hole in the bulwarks that the mooring line then passes through is the fairlead.

I'm pretty sure it isn't a bollard - to me that term brings to mind a big metal thing that you'd find on a tug or firmly anchored in concrete on the quayside.

From what y'all say it sounds like it could be a cleat, although the mention of a D-ring also sounds like a possibility.

Perhaps a picture would help? This is the thing I am after:

If you look on full size boat fitting sites it is known as a 'Bow Eye Bolt'.
I have no idea where you would get a model boat one other than a good bolt engineering supplier would no doubt make you one to a scale drawing for a reasonable charge.
It would need fastening through the hull.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, that's great! Now I know what it is called, I can Google some close-up images of the things, and source/make one for my boat. Cheers!

If you look at the following web address it should give you a PDF Document with several options of type and the full size dimensions of each which you could scale down:
www.southco.com/resources/documents/M7-Eyes.en.pdf
Cheers
