Battery power
« on: May 03, 2007, 10:21:46 pm »

I'm trying to get a 5 foot long destroyer ready for the Mayhem weekend. It has a single shaft and a Johnson 888 motor.

What voltage am I likely to need for scale performance? How many amps will it draw, so I can get a suitable speed controller?

All advice gratefully received.

not sure of the space you have in the destroyer but a good start would be either 6 or12v and possibly an electronize fr15 ,these have an ajustable output to give a hard or soft start so you can ajust to give a realisic start and running speed .

There's loads of space, and I'd sooner carry a bigger battery than ballast. It's really a question of whether 6 volts will do the job, or whether I need to go for 12. I'm not going to have time to experiment, and I don't want my destroyer chugging round Wicksteed slower than a tug!

Hi Jonty,

I had a Johnson 888 in an old Precedent Hanseat driving a 50mm brass prop. It gave good speed until the motor gave up. Current draw was over 20 amps at 12 volts.

Current draw depends on many things but voltage and load (prop size and pitch) are the main variables.

Hope this helps.
