Mystery Sketch Book and Drawings (Help I.D.)
« on: October 07, 2012, 02:28:38 pm »

I bought a sketch book and drawing quite some years ago from the first or maybe second Ellesmere Port Model Boat Show

The sketch book was tatty and was full and had loose leaves and extra pages in it also with all the sketches and drawing being in pencil I had it rebound and protective sheets put in it.
There are no signatures or date and I have no idea of who, when or where it was created. the most up to date sketch is of a Sea Dart System and Sea Wolf System, some added in sketches are on Ferranti headed paper and some on the back of a Ferranti Restricted Diagram of a Radar system.

The drawings are on draughtsman drawing paper some on large sheets and some on part sheets again no clue it who, when or where they were drawn, they are mostly British and German warships. and all in pencil.

Can anyone shed light on who, when and where they originate and value

hello there Tom

That looks to be like 'one hell of a good find' that book  :-))

When I first looked at the 'sample' drawings that you put on - my immediate thoughts were have you got a book which comprises of several draftsman's drawings?

The Fairmile sketch reminds me of John Lambert's plans/drawings.

Also, the submarine sketch reminds me of the late Norman A Ough.

The supplier tanker - could that not be from the Jacobin paddocks  %%  As far as the German one, could that not be by E N Wilson?   Also the German destroyer was there not a similar one produced by Model Boats plans service?  Of all of the drawings - that one looks most familiar.

Not much help, but that is the way I would be looking.

I have been browsing a David MacGregor plans catalogue for matching plans up - and there are similarities.

Tom, are there any more of these books out there for me.?/?????

aye

First or maybe second Ellesmere Port Model Boat Show seems to have been about 20 years ago. Which is about right when I got the drawings

The sketches in the book are obviously one persons work, the separate drawings I am also sure are all by one person.
But not so sure the book and separate drawings are the same person But I feel they are.

Warships resemble R A Sweets waterline series originally in Model Maker.

Hi, It is going back a bit, I noticed the Hartland Point, My friend & I toured this boat when it was in the Tyne, it had all means of ID removed, we had a bit of a job finding out which vessel it was. Nemesis

It's an intriguing find.  You might think about having it published if there are no copyright conflicts!

or scanning at a decent resolution with a view to publishing electronically - saved as a pdf, the scans (from the look of it could be fairly small file size as they appear to be monochrome, from personal choice I would scan as .tif, to retain a good quality with minimal file size.

If you look at the sketches in photo 3 and 5 they are very much like R.A.Sweets style.
