Modelshops in Shanghai and Hong Kong
« on: November 02, 2012, 05:31:16 pm »

Hi there

I will soon be going to Shanghai passing Shenzhen and then to HK on vacation (1. on in 3 years due to unemployment) and will of course be looking for some shops with model boats ect. and lakes where there will be a chance to meet other modelboaters  8)

In Shanghai I will be staying at Holiday Inn Down Town and in HK close to the racetrack.

Hope to get some good suggestions  :-)

You can go from your racetrack hotel to Kwong Wah Street in Mong Kok area on Kowloon side . There are more than 10 model shops for all sorts of RC modelling. There are three model boat ponds on Hong Kong Island side and Four ( including one to be opened later ) on Kowloon and the New Territories.
Enjoy your stay in Hong Kong.

Hi Solidus and welcome to Mayhem.

Is the model making Big in Hong Kong ?  I ask this because most of the world's modelling gear comes from there and you never really see films of any local modelling societies or sailing etc.

Cheers

Hi Solidus,  are you a resident of that area ?
Yes, I was born and raised in Hong Kong. There are quite a number of machining jobshops around Hong Kong and Southern China( most of them operated by people from Hong Kong ) serving the model-making business world-wide. I was once shown to a plant with 8000 workers for the railway models. There are foundries around that do bronze and aluminium castings for models.
Would anybody tell me what should I fill in on the reply verification -(this forum is about ? ). I have been visiting this excellent forum over the years and thank you all for the sharing and discussions, which I enjoyed thoroughly. My English is always rated as deplorable and I apologize for any inconvenience arising thereform.

There is a fantastic kit shop near Yuyuan Garden  Metro line 10  Shanghai
Might be Fuyou Road about half way along.  The problem is the Google map is a bit unclear.  I could walk to the place but the map is a bit harder.
They stock every kit "Made in China"  many I have never seen (and that saying something).

Hi Solidus,

Just a few words in English are needed to verify that you are not a Web robot.      :}

I think you are in by now, so welcome again.

Hi Snowflair
I still pop into Shanghai occasionally. Can you give some more detailed directions from the Metro Station to the model shop please. Station name, exit number, turn which way as you surface etc. would be extremely helpful, if you can.

Back from 2 weeks of joy :-)

Enjoyed the food (one of the reasons we went there) think my mother still feel the burning sensation of spicy food.

I didn't managed to find the shop in Shanghai due to my mother getting stressed out by the constant "you want to by  ...... "
BTW what is the polite phrase to use when you want to tell them "please park your  ....... where the sun newer shines"  in mandarin ;-)

Did find the shops in HK and they were fun to visit, didn't find anything I needed though. But did get some shirts from my tailor.

A good simple phrase is 'bu yao' (pron. boo yow), literal translation 'not want'.
In reality it means the same as 'no I don't want'.
'bu yao' is a complete sentence and direct, but not impolite. For emphasis say it 3 times.

If you use the mandarin they will think that you live there and are not a tourist and back off. Works every time for me.

Funny enough they didn't approach me but target my mother (easy victim ?)

Well if you go anywhere near HobbyKing, drop in and "kick as*" please, and ask them why it has taken 8 weeks, and still no sign of my order coming into stock! They took my money,on ordering, and if they do this with most of their customers, look at the interest they must be accumulating,no wonder they sell things cheaper! Buyers Beware!!!!
